| Not judging, just curious. I've read on the other thread where someone said a lot of kids are going to go hungry. Is this true? If your kids , those who eat lunch at school, don't get it, do they go hungry or do you have food at home to feed them? |
| No my kids dont rely on free lunch, but it is true that its a concern in DC. I've been told it's one of the reasons that on half days they still serve lunch, instead of letting the kids out before lunch. |

Google the data. Among other sources:
http://www.dchunger.org/about/facts.html http://feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/hunger-studies/map-the-meal-gap.aspx From Cap Area Food Bank: D.C. has the second highest child food insecurity rate of any other state in the nation, with 30 percent of children under the age of 18 (31,460 out of 101,879 children) living in food insecure households. |

I doubt starving families sit around on DCUM.
OP is clueless. |
My thoughts exactly |

Yes. She hates it (both worrying others will find out she's on free lunch and the taste/quality of the food) and is THRILLED to get "home food" for a couple of extra days.
It is a little bit of a stretch, but she will not go hungry. |

There are families in DC that expect a lot of freebies.
There are families in DC that are incapable of planning ahead to pack a sandwich for their kid. There are a lot of people in this town who are a total mess. |
There are also a lot of douchey commenters on DCUM. |
| Must be nice to live in a bubble. |
Someone should be asking why this happens and what exactly the stats show in the DC area given that school age kids 3 and up in DC are entitled to free breakfast, free lunch, free snacks and sometimes free dinner. The first 3 are available year round. This is in addition to food stamps and WIC their parents receive at home. |

The feeling is mutual. Yes, there are poor folks in DC but there are also a lot of deadbeats who don't bother to help themselves or their kids, who live to scam the system. That's a fact. Pull your head out of your ass. |
| You can't be serious. |
THAAANK YOU! I've always chuckled at that "Schools stay open because it's the only hot meal these kids will get all day" as if they're serving good quality meals. Most kids HATE those pre-packaged school lunches. |
PP, you need to watch the video in this link. Are there folks who scam the welfare system? Sure. But the numbers pale in comparison to the folks "at the top" that scam the system every day. Stop worrying about the baby mamas and focus on the banks and Enron-like folks that are scamming the system by the billions. http://crooksandliars.com/2014/01/jon-stewart-takes-fox-and-right-continuing |
