What to avoid while TTC

Anonymous
My husband and I are just starting TTC. I know many of the things that should be avoided when pregnant (alcohol, caffeine, meds, etc.). I was wondering what things I needed to avoid while TTC. It seems the list of items to avoid are more strict for the first trimester, but at least for the first week or two I won't know if I'm pregnant yet. I rarely drink so I'm not worried about that. I'm thinking more about caffeine and taking Advil for the occasional headache.
Sorry if this is a very naive question. I'm new to thinking about all of this

Don't drink, avoid crystal Meth and bungee jumping. Otherwise you'll be fine.

Seriously, don't over think it.

I was going today birth control . I agree with pp, just live your life and don't overthink it. If you haven't yet done so, read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". It's very educational.

I was never a huge drinker but didn't abstain 100% while ttc. Fwiw the one successful pregnancy I had out of 5 (yes, 4 miscarriages, all unexplained) was the one where I actually drank a lot up until my bfp. I wasn't supposed to be able to get pregnant that cycle due to having a uterine biopsy in the tww and I was going through a crisis with my husband and handled it by drinking (not good in general I know and I stopped when I got my bfp). Not saying drinking is the way to go but that's my story.

Don't be underweight or too vain about your weight. If this has always been a focus, gain a few pounds. Nature doesn't want you to conceive if you don't have enough body fat. Nature wants to make sure the baby won't starve.

I would focus more on good nutrition and getting regular exercise, as opposed to "what to avoid." Yes, it's better to consume less caffeine/alcohol while TTC, but you already don't drink much alcohol and already know to drink less caffeine. A few drinks/cups of coffee during the first week or two of pregnancy is not going to hurt your baby. Likewise for occasional Advil.

Also, hopefully it won't be this way for you, but TTC can become emotionally fraught--I speak from experience. The less you obsess the better.

Agreed. I did everything "right" in the beginning and now, many, many months and a miscarriage later IDGAF.

Thanks everyone!
I'm trying to stay low key and not think about it too much!

Nutrition, understanding your fertile window, and not using lube, or using fertility friendly lube ie, preseed.

Prenatals, folic acid particularly.

I've haven't heard this advice before. Is there something in regular lube that effects sperm?
