does anyone else hate open floorplans?

We live in one now and I can't stand it. There is no privacy, and if the kitchen is messy the whole place looks messy. No place to hid during a dinner party.

We've started house hunting a bit and it seems like anyplace that has been redone has had all of the walls knocked down.

There must be a happy medium. Am I alone in thinking this way?

Yes, you are alone in thinking this way.

No, open floorplans are already dated. In a few years they will scream "aughts"

I hate open floor plans. I prefer private spaces. My husband does not....our next house purchase will be a battle...

This is why I prefer older houses. I like having delineated spaces.

Really sorry you can't sell your old house with choppy rooms but do you have to start the same fucking thread every week?

I tend to agree, although I wanted more open spaces when I had a baby/toddler to look after while cooking, etc.

What I really hate are modifications to the floorplans of old (pre-war and older) houses. I think removal of walls and doorways spoils authentic details.

I have an open floor plan on a new house. I can't see my kitchen from the foyer or the kitchen sink from the family room.

Maybe you should should just post a link to your original annoying rant or just bump that thread.

Are you the type of person who never cleans up their home and believes that cleaning up means throwing all your piles of shit into one closet or room?

Love open floor plans! The thought of being stuck in a kitchen unable to see my preschooler playing is yuck. There's no way I could keep him confined in a small kitchen while I'm trying to loads of cooking done.

I do not like completely open floorplans. I also hate the two story open family/living rooms with windows up the walls.

My mother's place is completely open and it is freaking LOUD - particularly with the wood floors. If you are cleaning dishes in the kitchen you cannot be watching TV.

I remodeled my home and have a semi open floor plan and it works well and buffers the noise by having some half walls. But my husband and I will never buy a home with an open floor plan.

It depends on what is open. I prefer slightly more defined rooms, but with doorways between them so there is a flow from one room to the next.

For example, we added a doorway between our kitchen and our living room where there used to be a solid wall. That gave us a way to go between kitchen and living room where the original plan had us having to walk into our hallway (past the half bath and hall closet) and through the front entryway, past the stairs, to get to our living room.

FWIW, we live in a late 60's colonial.

Actually, we've been looking for an open floor plan that doesn't cost a fortune and we've been very frustrated at how many houses still have one dinky room separated from another.

Why would you want to hide during a dinner party? And if you really need to, can't you hide in your bathroom? Or is your toilet in the open as well?

In a smaller house, open floor plan is great for flexibility to rearrange when having a crowd over.

I too hate open floorplans, especially open kitchens. Who wants to open the front door and see dirty dishes?? Looking to buy a Petworth rowhouse, and none of them have walls anymore! Super annoying.
