| I'm a SAHM interested in starting some kind of business. I have only generalist skills (decent communications, basic computer stuff, research, plus I speak a few languages including Chinese). Looking to stay at and work from home and am wondering what people think would be a good business to start with a strong demand out there for more providers. I could invest as much as 50 k in start up capital if needed. Thanks in advance for your thoughts? |
| The public schools offer Chinese in MC--You could tutor. |
| Check your gmail spam filter. It will have a ton of options that meet these criteria. |

Offer real engineering classes to TWEENS. Not Legos-for-6-yr-olds bday parties, and not (impressive) STEM classes for high ability teenagers who've had calculus.
Hit that middle group with quality offerings taught on weekends and evenings and summers. Not robotics, not coding. Advertise well, offer classes in all three jurisdictions. Don't tie it exclusively to a particular school that's willing to host it, by the way. That's too limiting. Whee, that's it. Good luck! |
What do you think these classes would look like and what kind of content would you want covered? Not to be snarky but building and working out building strategies helps build engineering skills. Then at the higher levels, kids need to have a very good grasp of the skill set that makes them excel in mathematics. Coding helps develop those skills. It's not coding to code. It's coding to learn the logic of programming. Sorry, but not every single kid is going to be cut out for engineering. |
| Drop in baby sitting type place. Indoor gym. |
| In this thread: a stupid OP |
| Dog walking business or personal errand service. You'd probably make decent money and you'd have a lot of flexibility. |
| Word to the wise about dog walking: I had a friend that did this in NoVA and it began to basically run her life. She started out part-time, had great references and clients but she did not factor in the amount of time it would take to drive back and forth between houses to actually get to the dogs. She said she ended up in her car way too often, wasted a lot of money in gas (probably did not accurately factor this into the price she charged), and was doing it basically 9-5pm everyday. |
So basically my point is that the expenses of having a few people out there working for you as dog walkers may be way more than you'd expect. |
I second the drop in baby sitting service |

i second a personal concierge service, and market it toward diplomat families with whom you can communicate in their home language. you can actually show them around DC as well, and tutor them in English if needed.
as an aside, i speak Spanish and English and was an assistant ESL teacher many years ago and i ended up privately tutoring a Colombian diplomat who really struggled with his English (was really surprised they sent him here as a diplomat given his difficulty with the language). it was a great experience, i loved him and his wife. |
Exactly what I was thinking re drop off/hourly baby sitting type of place |
