Will I get an u/s at my 8 week appt with Dr. Crowther?

It's not exactly clear on their website as to whether I will get an u/s at the first appointment or not. It says "order sonogram" but doesn't say when to get the sonogram.

I don't know about this particular dr., but I doubt it. Unless you are high risk for some reason, most drs do not perform a sonogram until "the big one" at 20 weeks. At 8 weeks there is really not much to see, and often you cannot even hear the heartbeat via doppler yet.

I am high risk, but I thought they did a sono early on to confirm dates?

I had sonograms in the doctor's office (quick ones) at 8 weeks for both kids to confirm how far along I was. You can't see much just a few cells and the heart beating.

No, you won't - unless perhaps if you have some unusually risky medical background. I went for my first visit with Dr. Crowther at 9 1/2 weeks in August, and I was slightly disappointed because I thought I would get an ultrasound. But she said they don't do them until a few weeks later when the uterus is moving up into the abdomen. It seemed like the longest wait at the time. If you have had a series of miscarriages or something, maybe she will do them.

My other tip is now I get my ultrasounds done outside of their office (at Wash. Radiology in Fairfax). I love the practice and doctors, but after having my 20-week u/s done in their office, I realized their sonogram equipment pales in comparison to the Wash. Radiology experience. I'm just a sucker for looking at big, clear images of the baby on the rare occasions I've had an ultrasound. Good luck!

I had one at my 8 week appointment to confirm due date (I was wrong by a week!). I didn't see Dr. Crowther though, I have a different doctor. Why don't you call and ask?

I did call and ask and the nurse said "maybe". Not much more info there

It's not the practice of the doc to do them, but from what I have heard they are all very accomodating..it has certainly been my experience with Dr. Masel and the midwife, Karen.

I had an U/S there at 8 weeks there with Dr. Masel because I was really nervous about everything being OK, as I had some early scares in my first pregnancy. They also did another one at 12 weeks because they didn't hear the heartbeat on the doppler.

Call them and ask? I am sure the receptionist could tell you.

Dr. Crowther is my ob/gyn. That practice generally (everything being normal) does not give first U/S until your 12 week nuchal translucency test, and then again at 20-22 weeks for the anatomy scan. I have heard from others, however, that if you are high risk or have specific concerns they will give you an U/S earlier than that. They do have the capacity to do it in their offices (though they sent me to Dr. MacClaren - maternal fetal specialist - for my regular ultrasounds).

I go to this practice as well and had an 8 week sonogram to confirm the due date, 12 week for the nuchal and then the 20 week. The 12 and 20 week ultrasound were done at MacLaren's office.
