Hi,
My husband and I own Salon Khouri in Fairfax, VA. (He is a stylist and I am a techie who works FT with computers ... how about that for an odd couple?!!?) We offer Japanese straightening (aka Thermal Reconditioning) at our salon. We offer two types - permanent straightening (we use Liscio) and temporary (Brazilian Keratin treatment). With the Japanese straightening, you can choose the level of straightening that you want done. For example, if you have super curly hair and want to just tame the curl, we can do that, or, if you want completely straight hair, we can do that. The service time is a minimum of four hours. The Brazilian Keratin treatment, on the other hand, is not a chemical treatment (meaning, you can have your hair highlighted or colored even the same day you get the Brazilian treatment). The Brazilian treatment applies a silicone to the hair to make it easier to flat iron and blow dry, but your hair will still be curly. This service is a minimum of 2 hours. We have over 100 photos on our bios/portfolios page at: www.salonkhouri.com/bios.html, including several Japanese/Thermal Reconditioning before and after photos. For both services, the cost varies depending mostly on your hair type and length. For the Japanese straightener, the cost also depends on how straight you want it your hair (ex: completely straight or just remove frizz and have it easier to straighten with a blowdryer or flat iron). The Brazilian treatments run $150 - $500 and the Japanese straightener runs $500 - $1000. |

The other thing I forgot to mention in my post is that, wherever you choose to have it done, please be sure that the technician is certified! Don't trust your hair to just anyone!

I have had my hair thermally reconditioned for 5 years now--I have extremely thick, individually course and curly hair---the process is a MIRACLE. I had a hard time finding someone when I moved here that used the original system (Yuko). It is the only system that works on my unruly hair. I have also had Liscio and it did not work as well---but totally depends on your hair. Mine is particularly difficult.
I go to Roche Salon in Georgetown and my stylist is Ruth. I have been to her for several years and she does a good job--also does a great cut. The salon is very nice as well and the owner always floats around and says hi. I do pay nearly $800 (that does include tip) each time and I do it every 6mo. It is worth every penny. For me, the treatment was lifechanging as my hair was such a source of making me feel frumpy and unkempt!! I totally reco it and would check out several salons---get some opinions and find the stylist you like. Also, beware if you have any color/bleach in your hair--make sure to tell them any chemicals you have done. |
