MCPS middle school--final exams?

Anonymous
I am so confused. I am hearing for the first time that my 6th grader has final exams starting today and into next week. I received no announcements about this from the school and my child isn't able to tell me what these exams are. Only that they are not MSAs. I went to the school website and I see next week will have a totally modified schedule with 2 hour time blocks for exams. Can someone explain?

They are mid-term or final exams depending on the class. Sometimes they are just a unit test. Some classes will nto have them. They are not usually weighted too heavily for 6th graders. I think they are mostly to accomodate the MS kids taking HS level classes and to get the kids ready for longer exams in HS. Your child likely got some review packets to prepare for them.

I am in the same boat. My kid did warn me about an exam in one class about a week ahead. He has no clue how to study for a big exam because he just aced everything in ES. He told me he has no other exams, but I am a little worried about it. I checked edline and did not see anything. Also, he doesn't have any HS courses, so maybe any disasters would be an ok wake up call. He is taking IM math in 6th and I am a little surprised that I can't find an exam for that class. I guess I will find out sooner or later, but yes I have a little anxiety. The main reason I want to know is just to show him how to study for these things. He has no clue about this kind of thing.

My 6th grader is taking IM and has a midterm. Mostly if they are doing well and go through the study packet they will be fine. It is still pretty spoon fed in MS

Thanks. I will go ask him again. For some reason, Math is his best class, even over health. I am sure he is like many 6th graders when he says, "I already heard this topic in class, so why do I need to study.". He's been burned once by this and part of me is ok with him getting burned for learning purposes. I at least want to remind him and show him how to study. He can decide whether he wants to study or not.

My DD is 6th and in IM but she told me that she did not have a mid-term. I thought these were stardardized across the county? She only has a mid-term in English and Science (she is not in a language). Too late to worry now, I guess...
