Smithsonian Camps for SN children

Anonymous
Just got a word that Smithsonian posted their summer camp schedule. Now that I work in DC, I thought it would be a good idea to have my rising K DS pursue one of his key interests - animals He has SPD. He's talkative, curious, enjoys a good crowd

Has anyone sent their SN children to Smithsonian camps? What has been your impression so far? How willing are they to accommodate SN children?

We've used this camp before for my non-special needs kid. I would read the description carefully. Some of the camps have a lot of activity--going to a different museum every day for example. In other camps, the kids go to one museum once, then spend the rest of the week in the camp room doing projects. You might also want to look at the zoo camp if animals is his thing.

I tried it for both my SN kid and my NT kid (to separate camps because they're four years apart). Both were disappointed, even though they chose different topics. SN kid chose computer animation. NT kid chose art. Both lost interest by midweek. The kids thought they'd go to museums every day, then were both bored by discovery that it's in a classroom just like every other camp.
