Unusual Question.
My husband and I are wondering why our daughter, age 9 and third grade, in a Blue Ribbon Montgomery County public school has never been taught the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States? We both remember learning this as a child in music class. Any insight? |
I never learned it at school. America the beautiful, this land is our land etc. But not the SSB. Too hard to sing? |
I never learned it at school either. |
Where did you go to school and how old are you? |
My kids all learned it in MoCo schools, but I don't actually know in which grade. They actually sing "America the Beautiful" more frequently, I think because it's easier to sing.
When I was a kid, I didn't learn it until maybe middle school. We always sang "You're a Grand Old Flag" in elementary school. |
Don't recall being taught Star-Spangled Banner. I don't believe it's a requirement. |
Dcps grad here (Murch, Deal, Wilson). In elementary school I remember singing "My Country Tis of Thee" after the pledge of allegiance every day. |
It seems that our country's national anthem should be taught in schools..period. |
Then we should change it to something you can actually sing. |
It doesn't need to be sung perfectly. But it should be taught. |
Why? Is an anthem really necessary? It's great that you feel loyal to it and all, but I think the US would be fine without it. |
Why? It's already sung at the beginning of every sporting event, and lots of other occasions besides. I don't see why it's necessary to also teach it in schools. |
I never learned the national anthem in school - I learned the Pledge of Allegiance. So far, same with our children. They learn the national anthem from attending/watching sporting events! ![]() |
So does that mean you aren't particularly loyal and couldn't give a crap? |
No. (Not the PP.) |
