Anyone know what the process is like to become substitute teacher for MCPS?

Anonymous
Wondering if it is a long process or pretty simple? Also, is it possible to request certain schools or do you need to be available for any school in MCPS?

Thanks in advance!

You can pick and choose what areas and school types (ES, MS, HS) you want to work at. Most schools have some subs that are "regulars" and are always called first, so if you want to get started and be busy off the bat, you'll have to be less choosey. Once you're known in a school, it's easier to stick to one area. I think the process is fairly easy, but takes forever. Hope that helps!

Are they hiring? Or is there a freeze?

They are always hiring. You need a bachelors degree. You can pick your subject area, grade level (HS, MS, primary ES, upper ES), general geographic area and/or specific schools. Agree that being less choosy in the beginning is a must. Leave your contact info when you leave your note, and the teacher might contact you directly next time, or pass it along.

College degree, clean criminal record, and a brief interview.

Having said that the teacher who was arrested last week had two arrests involving assault and somehow they missed it which makes me think that they don't bother checking.

no need for bachelor's.
You neeed a minimum of 60 credits.
The process this past year has changed.
Apply online and wait until someone calls you from central office for an interview (unless you know someone, then everything will be expedited). Once this is done you are assinged a number/pin and you can start substituting.

I think you have to have a
- college degree
- no patience for kids
- no motivation to help the kids with anything
- talent for degrading kids and making them feel scared most of the time

We have had a lot of subs this year. I'd say two or three of the 25 have been good. The others make the kids cry. They scream at the kids, say really odd things, eat messy food while they are in the middle of teaching something, and generally seem like they are not suited to be in a school environment.

I heard MCPS took everyone years ago and it shows.
I do understand that some are OK but we've seen a lot of them and it's really, really sad. These 5-7 year old kids are afraid to go to school because the substitutes can be borderline abusive.
