Where to store potatoes and bread?

Help me settle a long standing dispute between DH and myself. I grew up storing potatoes and bread in the fridge. He says both should be in the pantry (with bread in the breadbox). FWIW, we never have either in the house long enough for them to go bad but I am curious as to the right way to store these items.

I store both in the fridge (bread mostly in the freezer, actually) but mostly due to very little pantry/counter space. Both are totally fine at room temperature though.

We store potatoes in the fridge (or at least we did back in the good ol days when we ate white carbs). Bread is fridge or freezer. I prefer the fridge so I don't have to thaw the bread, but my DH is always sticking it in the freezer.

Bread in bread box (some back up bread in the freezer).

Potatoes in the fridge. Growing up, we'd keep them in the pantry but I prefer the fridge now.

I'm with DH, both in the pantry, and agree with the PP who said storing bread in the fridge makes it taste stale.

Freeze bread if you're not going to use it right away.

I didn't know that people stored bread or potatoes in the fridge. Cold temps converts the starches in potatoes to sugar and hastens the staling of bread.

What is the point of a bread box? Do you leave it in or out of the bag when you put it in there?

OP, I store both things in the fridge, as did my parents (which is probably why I do). To me, leaving bread out is like rolling out a welcome mat for ants and roaches and other bugs.

When I leave it out the bread gets moldy (often within days) and the potatoes get mushy and sprout.

We store both at room temperature. If we have extra bread loaves, we freeze and thaw for later use but never fridge.

I guess so. We did insulate our house and install all new windows a few years ago so don't have the cold spots we used to have. Maybe that's part of it.
