Painting estimate

Anonymous
I am so tired of getting multiple estimates for jobs, I just want to bounce this one off of the community.

We have a 15 x 10 room which needs significant dry wall sanding/smoothing/repair as well as a paint job- 4 walls + ceiling. Got an estimate of $1k. Reasonable?

I paid $500 to have two bedrooms (about 12x12 each) painted. Walls only, deep colors, minimal prep. Duron paint included in price.

Just got quote from same guy to do living room, dining room, master bedroom, sitting room (which includes tray ceiling). Walls, some prep to cover holes from old window treatments. Sherwin Williams paint included for $1100.

Love my guy--does exceptional work and can't beat price.

Yes--yours seems high.

Geez, painters must make a lot, I'd do odd painting jobs for people who buy their own paint for 20 bucks an hour. That's more than I make!

hell no, that's 300 + materials max.

Sounds high to me.

used this and got 3 rooms done for about 400 but I had to buy materials which came to about 100.

One thing to keep in mind with paint is that it costs a lot more to take old paint off and get the walls and trim in good shape than to put a few coats of paint up on a clean wall. Our fabulous painter charged us. $400 including paint to paint a room with top quality paint. This involved some minor trim work but nothing major. However he quoted nearly $3000 to do our hallway and entry. The door frame and surrounding trim is a mess and we need to strip a lot if paint. There are 3 doors and moulding etc. I think each job is different and you definitely get what you pay for.

Sounds like a lot to me.

That might be high, but some of the other claims in this thread ("300 + materials max") are just dumb. It sounds like good prep work in your case will take several times longer than the actual painting.

Thanks guys. Yes I agree that prep in this case is actually the hard part. Even the early responses made me think this is not too off base given how crappy the walls look now. I guess we will find out!

My parents had a three story house with tons of water damage painted and fixed. I think it cost 10,000.
