MC schools ? how many snow days have we had this year?

Anonymous
And how many more can we have without extra school?

We've had three including today, and MCPS has allocated for 4. But in prior years when we've gone over MCPS has requested some kind of emergency waiver from the state so extra school days aren't a sure thing even if we exceed the 4 allotted.

My understanding is you can only can get an emergency waiver if there was a state of emergency declared in the state. Which there was not.

How does that affect camps? Is this one of those things that we shouldn't register for the first week of camp right now since we don't know when our last day of school will be? Or if you register for that first week of camp and school is extended, will the camps just refund your money?

One thing that happened a couple years ago is that when we went over the limit of snow days they had school on Presidents Day. There was no warning or advance notification either, that I was aware of!

For some reason, I remember they cut into spring break one year, right?

I don't think that was in MCPS.

I agree PP unless it was a long long time ago. My kids are in MS and I don't remember any make up days cutting in to a vacation. Most years they seem to skip the make-ups which I think is very poor.

None of the three days were necessary. They were products of the hysterical parents who were at McDonalds by 9am.

You know for a fact that the person who makes the decision about closing MCPS is a hysterical parent, who was at a McDonald's by 9 am? How do you know this?

McDonald's?

I don't understand.

I'll make it easier. Hysterical parents are the reason that school is closed after 2-3 inches snow events. It's too dangerous to go to school yet the same parents are on the street with their children going to McDonalds by 9am.

While this may be good for elem and MS, adding days at the end of the year is plain silly for HS. We've missed three days in the fall. Most MCPS HS classes are single semester classes. It does absolutely no good to add days to the spring semester, particularly when they're added AFTER AP and state exams! What should be done is delay the start of spring semester by a day or two, so the effect of the snow days is more evenly spread.
