DC's are 15 and 18 and we will probably let them bring a friend. We want something westerny and casual, not the Ritz or the Four Seasons. Ideally, kids could get up and walk to hiking trails or kayaking/canoeing or fishing. I'm thinking cabin but a house/condo would work, too. But we would need 2 or 3 bedrooms. I don't know the area well. I would like to do rafting trip for a couple of days, go horseback riding, hike some spectacular mountains (day trip), do some mountain biking. We want to go in July or August. I'm open to Grand Targhee, Teton National Park, but I think we'll steer clear of Yellowstone. We are a hiking and kayaking family and want to spend time outdoors. I wouldn't mind driving into town to do some shopping but it's not a priority.
If you've done a trip or have any advice please weigh in! Thanks! |

Jackson Lake Lodge is nice. Jenny Lake Lodge is nicer but $$$.

Luton's Teton Cabins - right outside one of the entrances to the Tetons. I know they have 2-bedroom cabins with pullout couches and kitchenettes. I blv one of the bedrooms has 2 beds. It was clean, comfortable and a much better deal than the park lodging.
If you are flying out there, I would highly recommend you do not skip Yellowstone. It can be very busy, esp if you visit in August. But since you love to hike and enjoy nature, it would be a crime to miss one of the jewels of the national park system. If you get up and out early you will see a lot of wildlife. If you hike for 10 minutes on a trail, you will see very few people. The majority if visitors jump off a tour bus at Old Faithful (the least interesting aspect of the park IMHO), snap a picture and leave. REI used to have some excellent books on hiking trails out in Yellowstone and the Tetons. Enjoy. |
| Thanks PP's! I'll look into those ideas. |
| If you can swing it, the Spotted Horse Ranch offers everything you're looking for in an easy package. Very relaxing to have all the planning done for you and a gorgeous location. |
| Anyone? |
We stayed at Jackson Lake Lodge. We stayed in the cottages - nothing fancy, but clean and simple. The only downside IMO was that the lodge is fairly far from town, but you said that isn't a priority to you so maybe it doesn't matter. |
