oh no! non-pasturized cheese binge!

I looooove pimento cheese (ok, I am from the South) and I just entered my second trimester. I guess I got a little too excited by the fact that I am not vomiting anymore and totally binged on pimento cheese. I didn't realize until AFTER the binge that it isn't pasturized (at least it doesn't say that it is). I guess there is nothing I can do about it now but I am so mad at myself for not looking. I bought it at the Giant and it is a well-known (to those of us who eat pimento cheese, anyway) brand.

I read that you may not even know you have listeria but it can still kill your fetus!

Women in France drink wine and EAT unpasteurized cheese and their babies are just fine. Don't fret!

Pimento isn't really a cheese, but more a cheese spread. The cheese in it is cheddar which should be fine.

of course it is pasteurized. it is cheddar and cream cheese. you need to get a lot more sophisticated than pimento cheese to start worrying about non-pasteurized varieties (think specialty stores). i am from the south, too, and ate about 1,000 lbs of pimento cheese during my pregnancies. then again, i eat sushi and drink coke, too...

Didn't I read on here that all cheeses in the U.S. are pasteurized?

Anything called "pimento cheese" is pasteurized.

It is not the case that all cheese available in the US is pasteurized. Anything that comes in sealed plastic (versus sliced for you at the cheese - not feli, but cheese - counter) is most likely pasteurized. All the commercial brands are.

I would bet money it was pasteurized. I'm from SC, and I ate a ton of pimiento cheese during my pregnancy. Yum.

Op here. Thank you all so much. Since it didn't specifically read "pasturized" in the ingredients list after cheese and milk, I just assumed. I feel better now and am terribly pleased that I can continue eating it...!

I've always eaten unpasteurized cheese, even during pregnancy. No harm ever to me or baby!

That said, I bet you a thousand dollars that cheese was pasteurized. If you bought it at Giant, it was most definitely pasteurized.

US law prohibits the production or sale of soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk. So unless you got your pimento cheese from a bootleg dairy that is operating outside the US regulatory system, it was pasteurized. Hard cheeses that are aged for a certain amount of time (I think it's 60 or 80 days) can be made from unpasteurized or raw milk, but the aging takes care of the listeria and so these are safe. Anything that you get at a grocery store is fine.

PP 16:14, thank you! Seriously, people have women so paranoid that they're worried about eating processed cheese. Trust me, it may not be the healthiest, but as PP just said, you can bet it's healthy. Unfortunately, listeria does in fact happen, but it's usually a contamination issue, not something that's just growing in cheese, especially pasteurized cheese. If you're worried about listeria, the best thing to do is go to the FDA's website and sign up for their food recall emails -- they'll give you warnings from everything from undeclared allergins in food to actual listeria outbreaks. Meantime, I encourage anyone who knows "the truth" about cheese to spread the word. I'm so tired of hearing well-meaning people warn me away from a perfectly safe chunk of brie!
