Public vs Private

Are there any public colleges/universities that have a even balance of in state versus out of state students? I want DS to have peers of all differ placers and having a hard time in if dim some small colleges. Private I'm finding some but we can't afford the tuition.

How about going to the best college you can afford, doing well and getting a good job in a city with people from all over the country and world?

While I have never done a survey OP, I am fairly sure the answer to your question is no. The whole point of state schools are to provide lower cost education for taxpayer in that state. Some take more oos students -- they pay more subsidizing in state tuition and round out the educational experience, but 50-50 would surprise me. Even UVA and William and Mary are about 2/3 in-state.

Michigan is over 40 percent OOS. But tuition isn't that much lower for OOS than a private college. UVA is also expensive OOS.

I would like to know too. Maybe 70 30?

Well that may be true, but my best friends are ones I found in college from 5 different states. Although I went to a private Institution.

Here is a list. Small states like Delaware, Vermont, ND and WV seem to have the highest percentages.

I think it's an interesting criteria but I'm not sure how much weight my DC would give it. I know she wouldn't want to go to WV OR ND. Knowing Rutgers is such a small percentage of OOS did change my view of it somewhat. The rest of the schools she is interested in are about 18-30 percent.

Lots of privates give tons of "merit" aid, so don't rule them out based on the sticker price.

OOS state schools with about 35% OOS students: UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, Michigan, U South Carolina, Pitt, Penn State, Clemson. UDel has about 70% OOS.

Not sure about the UC schools (but I know Californians were up-in-arms about the high number of OOS students), but U Miami is another popular OOS destination.

Not U Miami (private) but Miami (Ohio) is a state school with a lot of OOS students.

Is Virginia too homogenous? A kid from Abingdon is pretty different from a kid from Fairfax. Heck, a kid from Middleburg is pretty different from a kid from Falls Church.

And my best friends are ones I found in college, mostly from the same state. It has a lot more to do with meeting them in college and sharing formative experiences than what state we grew up in.

Not to mention kids of different ethnicities and national origins, even if they happened to graduate HS in your state.
