| I am a federal employee and I'm wondering about the possibility of working part-time to supplement my earnings. I have a 4 days 10 hours schedule with every Friday off. I would be interested in learning from others experiences with part-time work. I realize that I will have to clear any outside employment with my ethics office. I work in an IT related field so that might prevent me doing that type of work outside my agency. I'm looking for night and/or weekend job ideas. I'll also consider opportunities where the benefits are the key such as with hotels or airlines. Any leads/ideas? |

What about going into business for yourself? For example, helping people fix their computers, designing websites, small networking jobs for smaller businesses or homes? You'd have to look into whether you need a business license or if you could just do it on the side and, of course, report the taxable income.
Alternatively, maybe a small business that needs a computer person? I guess IT needs can spring up at any point so you may have to make yourself somewhat available either before or after your fed work shift. You won't get rich from either of the above but you should be able to make a little extra cash. |

How about cleaning homes?
|
| How about starting an in home laundry business where you go to the customer's home and do their laundry? |
R U the person who started the thread about how their laundry will do them in?

You can work within your field as long as you do not have a direct conflict with your federal position. For example, I work in an agency where most people have professional healthcare degrees, we are allowed to work in our fields as long as the work we do does not conflict with our roles in the Agency and we are not representing ourselves as Federal employees in our outside positions. You do have to go through Ethics before you may work outside the agency.
You can also just work retail or something fun that you find interesting like PT in a bookstore or at Pottery Barn. |
| Can Feds with other side jobs share their experiences? What side work are you doing and how much extra are you bringing in? |
| I worked in retail for the discount when I bought my first home and needed to decorate. Retail doesnt pay much but I ended up saving a lor of money overall. |
| Something fun like helping a company do tastings of wine or other products. Container store and Costco pay well. |
| Not sure if PP is OP, but your answer if going to vary quite a bit depending on the federal profession. A lot of people with advanced degrees teach at local universities. Some of our admin staff have retail and grocery store jobs. I don't know of any of our IT staff who have a second job, but you might look into doing IT work for a small business. |
