Is it the smell of cats

Is it the smell of a cat that keeps mice away or does a cat really need to be a mouser. All my life with cats no mice. Only a dog damn near mouse infestation

Yeah, exactly -- rodents avoid cat-smelling places, even if the cat just lies around.

I guess my cats don't smell, then, because they've killed 7 mice over the past 2 years and presented them to us. Apparently the mice are not deterred by the cats' presence.

Guess what? Without the cats you would have been seeing mice all over your house.

If I lived in an area commonly infested with mice/rats and dense housing I would get a squad of terriers. Terrier Rat Patrol in the house and small yard. No litter box to clean.

Can't be the smell. I lived in a place years ago and my then kitty neatly killed and left 2 rats out for whatever reason kitties do that.

Probably. But we've never seen so much as a dropping. Just dead mice courtesy of the feline patrol. They get the cave crickets too.
