Fine china w/metal trim--dishwasher or no?

Anonymous
MIL has passed down her wedding china (I never bothered with a registry so it's lovely to have some). Hers is a great pattern with platinum trim. They recommend not putting it in the dishwasher but I can't imagine hand-washing after a dinner for 10. What do you do?

hand wash, you can put in dishwasher and not use heated dry but over time it will show the damage.

Handwash or you will ruin it.

Must handwash if you want to maintain. I ruined some dishes by putting in the dishwasher when I was young and stupid.

Use a rubber spatula to scrape off food; let them soak in a little sudsy water, and uses a soft sponge--not a scrubber.

well I'm going to go against the grain here. I agree that dishwasher will eventually damage the dishes but I'd rather use them and have them look less than pristine, than never use them because I don't want to handwash.

No dishwasher for the metal trim. My parents' wedding china was metal trim, but my mother always hated it (her MIL had picked it out without even checking with her). We handwashed it for years, but then for a 25th wedding anniversary present she bought herself something she liked. We then turned these into "backup dishes" and started dishwashing them. The metal part turned, but I still have some for "breading dishes" and that kind of thing. I also kept a couple of the very odd extra pieces, like gravy boats, that my contemporary set doesn't come with.

For some patterns and finishes, the metal will get ruined the first time out. Others will get messed up over time. Your risk.

No dishwasher for these. Hand wash only.

Hell No to the dishwasher for ANY China

I use the dishwahser for mine; otherwise I'd never use the china!

My sister has the Lenox Montclair pattern with platinum trim and has always put them in the dishwasher she's been married for 18 years and it still looks great.

Another hell no to the dishwasher! Doesn't everyone know that you hand wash fine china?

Are people honestly this lazy? You can't hand wash expensive fine china the 1-2 times a year you use it? Why even bother having it then?

Some of use it a lot more often than 1-2 times per year.
