My husband had a better than expected holiday bonus and we wanted to help a family in need as a way to give back.
We are weary of charities with their high overhead and self serving directors raking in excessive salaries. I'm from Chicago and there the central post office has a bin of letters to santa from poor kids -- you can pick one out and buy them stuff. Does anyone know of anything like that in the DC area? Thanks

Wow, how generous of you!
The post office in Brookland is participating in Operation Santa Claus. Looks like tomorrow is the last day. See: http://about.usps.com/corporate-social-responsibility/Letters-to-Santa-Locations.pdf |

Check out near by churches. Many usually have a Christmas tree lined with paper ornaments. each ornament contain a kids age, size, etc that are less fortunate.
Toys for Tots. Salvation army. etc. |

check with near by schools. I know our DC charter school has a tree with names of kids that are less fortunate.

Angel Tree
Angel tree matches donors with children from qualified families unable to provide gifts and clothing to their children during the holidays http://salvationarmynca.org/angel-tree/ |
| Hortons Kids is great. |

Arlington County has a secret Santa program that benefits: children in foster care, low-income families, individuals with disabilities, seniors, etc...

Our Daily Bread in Fairfax does a great job. They run the county's Thanksgiving and December Holiday program. odbfairfax.edu

Salvation Army is rabidly anti-Gay. I cannot reconcile that with their benevolence and deliberately exclude them from my charitable efforts. |
| Stepping Stones shelter in Rockvile houses homeless women and their kids. They always have wish lists for the kids. |
| A Wider Circle also does a great job. They transition people out of homelessness with a low overhead and likely know many families in need. |
The Salvation Army is a church. Like many other branches of Christianity they unfortunately do not support gay marriage. That doesn't make the organization any more "rabidly anti-gay" than the pope. |
