PG County schools charging PTAs?

Anonymous
I can not express how terrible PG County Schools are. This will just further impoverish the meager opportunities available for enrichment in the area. We already have so few options. It's like they want to keep PG County children poor and limited. The schools in nice places like Arlingon and Fairfax don't charge the PTA to host after school enrichment. God I can't wait to move out of this county.

We as parents have to take a stand against PG charging the PTAS for hosting after-school programs during the week at their respective schools. Charging the PTAS for using the space after school is a deterrent that is only going to hurt the students. PG is always on some BS and I truly wonder if they really care about the quality of our kids education. Why would PG expect the PTAS to pay them for providing their students with instruction/enrichment after school.

If you can call the school board and write them a letter/e-mail expressing your frustration and disappointment with the administration.

I will contact them. Thank you for posting the contact information. They can't get away with this BS in more affluent counties because the parents would not tolerate it. We should show them that PG parents care about their children too and won't be pushovers!

We've always had to pay for space at our school. Our afterschool art program is about $40 which covers the teachers and the space.
Our school (not naming names) is really good at fundraising and we have one huge fundraiser that brings in $10,000-$15,000 each year. It's a community event and not a school event which is how we are able to raise so much money in a relatively poor school.

What I have found is that it's all the same parents who keep joining the PTA and it's always the same parents volunteering for and organizing events. It's really difficult to get the newer parents involved.

The article says that Moco nor Fairfax PTAs have to pay and I think it should be the same in PG. PG schools need all the help they can get.
