How much does your family spend on medical expenses?

For me, it averages $3,000 a year in deductibles and co-insurance for meds, visits, testing, surgery etc.
Plus $400 a month comes out of my paycheck for coverage.

I'm interested in what the norm is

We pay about $300/monthly for our part of the insurance and then zero for meds, testing, surgery because we haven't needed any. Three kids under 7 but (thankfully) they only have needed to go to the doctor for their annual visits plus 1 or 2 sick visits each in their lifetimes.

you know this will be all over the map, right? i mean, if you have just one child with SNs or a type 1 diabetic or something, the expenses will be much higher.

that said, I think our family is right around yours, which is why I'm taking a leap of faith and switching from a premier BCBS plan to a high-deductible plan that allows me to open an HSA.

The difference in premiums is about $3,000. Plus I add the $2,500 I would have put into a use-or-lose FSA.

If all goes like it has in a "normal" year, I'll pay the $3,000 in premiums and roughly $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses (including co-pays, glasses and contacts, lab fees, etc). I'll be able to roll over about $2,500 into next year's HSA. All without affecting my take-home pay in my paycheck.

Then after two years of this I'll have $5,000 in the HSA right around the time I need to get my kid braces.

I pay about $2300 annually in premiums for me and DS - medical, dental and vision. This year we didn't need a lot of medical care beyond preventive so out of pockets were under $1,000. I did a health care FSA for $750 so saved a bit in taxes. Not bad, considering.

We are just about to switch insurance, which will run us about $3k in premiums for the year for a family plan.

We also have dental insurance that runs us $1400 in premiums per year. We have a co-pay for that for adult cleanings to the tune of $120 a year.

Otherwise, 2 co-pays for a physical for my H and an GYN appointment for me, for $50 and approximately $500 in contacts per year for my H. Well-child visits are free and we've had no sick visits this year.

Just about $5K total then.

I forget what our premium is - BCBS fed PPO for family coverage. But, our out-of-pocket expenses each year are in the $7500 to $9000 range. I'm sure many families are worse. Those who have already posted should consider themselves lucky.

I forgot the premium. It's a standard family PPO. Out of pocket around $500/year. We rarely go to the doctor.

Over $30,000 just for insurance and over $10,000 for deductibles and copays. I have a chronic illness/permanent disability requiring multiple surgeries this year alone and weekly PT forever. If you are healthy, count your blessings

Premiums were $7,800 (incl 2 mos of COBRA) and we spent $6,500 out of pocket for deductible, co-insurance, and meds for DH, DS, and me. I did have sinus surgery this year, which really upped our out-of-pocket expenses.

Well I paid 450 a month for health coverage via my employer so theres that. We ALWAYS reach our 5000 deductible and then pay 10 percent. Rx is mostly coverage and we don't have co pays (yet). So thats 10,400. We are pretty healthy but I have 3 kids so its always something. This year included eye surgery (crossed eyes), ear tubes, one broken arm and glasses among other issues.
