| What do families do for teachers? Gift cards, cash? I don't know what is typical and have 3 PS teachers at a charter. TIA. |
| I always purchase Visa gift cards. |
|
Room parents generally collect for gifts for a joint gift for the teachers. An involved parent also always takes the lead on collecting contributions for the aftercare teachers. I appreciate this effort very much and always contribute early and well.
If you can have your children make cards for their teachers, that is a great addition. |
| Cash or gift cards- no novelty items, mugs, candy, chocolate, etc. |
| Follow up question from OP: between teachers, after care and day care teachers, I have a number of people I would like to give to (10). What amount is customary and do you tier your giving based on main teachers, assistants, aftercare? |
| cash = classy |

Alternative to cash, if there's no organized gift, could be donation to school annual fund in teachers' names. Or any charity you might normally donate or that you know matter to people at your school. And nice cards with drawing or something from child.

Gift cards - target, amazon, bookstore
Visa card At least $25 per. |
For each of 10 people? In preschool? That sounds like a lot. It's not like anyone is going above and beyond to write recommendations or coach football. Ask parents at your school or the principal what might be appropriate. There's no right or wrong here. It's not like tipping at a restaurant. |
| Do most people do teacher gifts? A card from the kid I understand, maybe a homemade something or a group gift is nice, but with all the teachers that could really add up. |
I am assuming this is DCPS, in private preschools the teachers get paid less and I would tip at this level for the actual teachers, less for the specials instructors that come by once a week. In DCPS I do $20/classroom at the holidays and at the end of the year as part of the classroom gift. |
| Homemade candles and a nice sponge cake with vanilla frosting is always a good choice. The teachers like to share the cakes with other teachers and they really enjoy taking a warm bath surrounded by flickering candles. |
|
Give what you can but $25 to each of three teachers (the OPs question) who spent 8 hours a day for the last four months with your kid seems the least you can do. Especially if your child likes school and is thriving in their care.
Please don't give cakes and candles. Not every one likes cakes and candles. Homemade cards and thank you's, yes. Cakes and candles they can live without (BTW, the reason they share it is because they don't want to eat it.). - teacher with a box in the basement full of said candles (and frames and bath salts and warm, fuzzy socks) when I would have 100% preferred cash or gift cards |
