Another Holiday Card Comment-I don't do them

Anonymous
Its a hassle. Anyone else?

Who the heck cares? Everyone gets the same silly message and it just creates clutter. It seems to me to be just an annoying exercise. I keep the cards hanging around the house for a few days and then it all goes in the trash-what a waste.

I suppose, I can see the value of making a little "newsletter" recapping the year, but who all wants to read about where we went on vacation or who graduated or our darling new puppy?

One year, I recieved a Christmas Newsletter from a friend of mine. All they could really talk about was buying a new car.

I agree.
"Seasons Greetings"?
Tell someone who gives a shit.

What a bunch of Grinches! If you don't want to do holiday cards, then don't. But why the demeaning comments about those who do?

We actually do ours in Feb. At first it was because we missed the holiday season, but then we figured that people would appreciate it more a few months later, and they get a nice photo of our girl to put on their fridge.

I don't do them either but I enjoy getting them! Maybe when my kids are older I'll have enough spare time/energy/organization to do them again.

I don't do them, either.

But more power to you if you do.

We get 4 or 5 of the "newsletters" a year and there is always one that is way out there. I usually bring it to work for a good laugh!

These "grinches" are probably the same ones who don't send thank you cards.

Well, now, the newsletters do often tend to be unintentionally funny. My friend's mom used to send one out that was 2 pages long, single spaced, raving about how fabulous everyone was doing. The truth was much different. When my friend got her copy, she and I and her boyfriend would read it out loud (while drinking of course) and then paraphrase what was REALLY going on every few sentences. It was a good time. Since my friend was there making fun of it herself, I didn't feel too bad.

Then there's my husband's aunt who sends one out that tells it like it is. "Son is getting divorced since his wife has been cheating on him with her coworker." Stuff like that. I was pretty shocked the first time I read one of her holiday newsletters.

Who is demeaning?

Really, its quite goofy. I'm not being demeaning I'm just sayin'. You get a card with some picture of snowflakes, stars, or deer glistening in the moonlight and the inside says "Seasons Greetings". What is that? It goes right in the trash, why would i need that stuff creating clutter around my house? Some of these people that send me cards, I NEVER talk to other than the card they send our family once a year that contains some inpersonal printed messae on the inside that 250 other people got on the mailing list as well. Only a FEW people take the time to write a personal hand written message on the inside and I find that thoughtful, but I can really do without the rest and so can our landfills. I must get 75 cards between Thanksgiving and New Years. Oh well at least Hallmark can stay in business.

I agree that a purchased card with nothing but a signature is a total waste.

But I LOVE getting "dear friends" letters (I don't care that they're not personalized) and I love getting pictures of people's families. Even if the letters are a little delusional, I still like getting them.

A friend of my mom did something extra cool this year: she must have gotten all her old photos digitized, and she must have sent a different one to each person on her list... She sent me a picture of myself as a toddler at Christmastime. How cool is that?? To find a picture of ME at the same age my daughter is now, print it and send it with the card? Made my day.

MOST people are not so thoughtful. We get the run of the mill costco printed greeting cards with nothing other than a picture (that we could have just gotten in email) or the plain printed greeting card, lucky to get a hand written sentence, some even have digital signatures, and then the occasional newsletter telling us all about the summer vacation to OBX.

I feel like now that I have Facebook, all my friends have seen current photos and know my news. In fact, the card they get will have a photo of my kids that is older than the ones they see online. So, I'm not bothering. I live for the letters that people send my parents. None of my friends have started sending them yet, but I'm sure that will be hilarious if it ever happens. My favorite card, though, every year comes from one family who has beach pictures of the brother and sister hugging, etc. This has been going on since they were teenagers and the girl is always in a bikini and/or posing in a way that makes her look topless. I need to go by my mom's to see if it has arrived yet...

We love receiving holiday cards with photos -- it's so nice to see holiday photos of friends and family who live far away. It's also a nice way to keep in touch with friends from college or folks we rarely see anymore. I just did my holiday cards last night -- 80+ cards with a personally written sentence or two along with a picture of my kids in their holiday outfits. It's really not too hard to pull off, and I think folks like to receive the cards and photos (sometimes we get phone calls after folks receive them, and sometimes folks reference the card and pic in the cards they send to us). My older child likes to get the mail and hang the holiday cards and photos up -- and they make the house look festive.

I don't do a holiday letter, but I have to say that I love reading them. We have some friends and relatives who do really cool letters with photos -- and they aren't pretentious at all. Although I must admit that I love reading the bragging kinds -- my siblings and I compare the worst letters each year -- it's actually pretty fun.
