Is it possible to permanently lose your sense of smell?

I'm on the back end of a nasty sinus infection. Antibiotics are done, nasal passages are clear with the occasionally need to blow my nose but my sense of smell hasn't returned. I've never had this happen before.

Yes. Think there was a nasal spray? that was on the market that did this. Think the company only found out after people complained.

Yes but it is usually die to trama. My DH lost his after a severe car accident.

Yes. Damage to the olfactory bulb.

My mother has almost entirely lost hers. She was a nurse for many, many years and she thinks all of the bleach they used to disinfect everything caused it.

same thing happened to my father as you, OP. nasty virus, completely lost his sense of smell. after consulting a number of specialists and not receiving a positive outlook, he has been taking an over the counter herbal supplement for many years now (not sure of the name, begins with L i think). he recently said that his sense of smell is back at about 40% of what it was (i asked him to articulate in percentages so i could have a sense of where he was at).

This is an excellent book with a lot of facts -- this woman lost her sense of smell and eventually regained it.

Related to zinc deficiency.

Actually it was the zinc spray that PP was referring to. You may be thinking of selenium deficiency. In any case, get to an ENT.

I lost my sense of smell after a head injury.

It did come back somewhat with my first pregnancy. All I could smell were things that made me nauseous.

Now it's still not great but is there. I won't be able to smell what everybody else does all the time and fragrances give me a headache. Most things that are supposed to smell good, like candles and lavender, smell horrible to me.
