We are in the process of going through the Child Find evaluation. If my child is found eligible, it will be because he is deficient in his language skills. I was looking at the program options for PEP and it looks like the Speech and Language program is different then PEP. From what I've been able to find out, SL is either 2 days/wk or 5 days/wk for 2.5 hrs. Does anyone have experience with these programs? Is there a list of schools that offer the specific SL programs? What days of the week are the 2 day programs? Mornings or afternoons?
Thanks for any insight anyone can provide. Yes, I know I can wait and ask at the evaluation but I'm in the process of scheduling other therapys and am trying to figure out my potential options. |

OP again--this is what I'm trying to get clarification on:
Speech and Language Services Pre-K Language Classes are offered for eligible students two days/week, for two-and-a-half hours each day, where students work on communication development, articulation skills, and intelligibility. Classes are available five days/week for two-and-a-half hours each day for students with moderate to severe comprehensive speech-language needs. |
| My son was in the two day for a short time. The way I understand it is the 2 day is for expressive and the 5 day is for receptive and expressive. The 2 day was at goshen in the mornings. He was 3 at the time. |
Thank you. Can I ask why only a short time? And which 2 days did he attend? |
Not PP, but I'm sure that there are more s&L schools than goshen, they would have one downcounty also. |
| These programs are for kids who have articulation issues only (as it was explained to me) and who don't need any OT or PT. I don't think there are that many sites. |
OP here...I thought articulation was the ability to make the speech sounds. So articulation issue would be a speech issue. But expressive and receptive issues are the inability to understand and vocalize thoughts--more of a language issue. My son makes the vocal sounds okay and when he does talk you can clearly understand him. But it's his expressive, receptive, and pragmatic skills that are causing the issues. |
We've been out of PEP for a while, but if the issues go to receptive speech he might be a good fit for the regular PEP program. |

OP,
Getting info on the Speech and Language Early Intervention Programs in Montgomery County is like looking into the abyss. The Goshen program exists but it is way far away from where we live. The powers that be at Child Find would tell me that there is one closer to me but refused to tell me which school. Seriously. They kept saying b/c it could change. It's absolute bullshit. Maybe someone can tell you where it is. I doubt you'd find it online. I observed the one at Goshen and wasn't very impressed with their methods. (This isn't to say you shouldn't do it.) I would try Basic Concepts or National Speech for summer camps. (Very pricey, but we did one of these and it made so much difference.) Also, there's the Leap Preschool at the University of MD at College Park. It's one of the few language-based preschools. Individual speech three days a week. Fantastic for what you get. |
LOL. Makes me feel better that you feel the same way. I've heard that Speech and Language exists but I can't seem to find a darn thing about it. Goshen isn't that far from me. It's not close, but it's not an hour either. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't think too highly of their methods. That's depressing. I've heard great things about LEAP. It's on my list of schools to look at. |
| Leap is great. |
| It's really hard to get into the speech classes. They want kids with good behavior and pragmatics with poor artic skills for the 2 day and poor expressive/artic and fair receptive with good behavior for the 5bdays. Your son sounds more like a pep kid. The pep programs are great though and there are more location options. |
| PP here I think he went on Tuesdays and Thursdays but honestly I'm not sure. I did like the program and felt that it really did help his speech. My son overall needed more help and is now in pep classic. |
Definitely tour the schools whether it's through the county or Leap. The really silly thing was that we qualified for the speech program but they wouldn't tell me which school for the lower county has it. I opted out b/c I needed to have some idea of proximity. Even if my kid was bussed, I have other kids who need to get to preschool/school. So even though it's a moot point, I'm really hoping someone can DCUM can say where it is b/c I want to see how this game of Mystery Date ends. |

This is 19:08 again. Here are two docs I found a while ago on the mcps website that might be helpful to you:
http://www.mccpta.com/parentInvolve_dir/prin_hb_1011/H-Student_Enrollment/10a-SpecialEducationProgramDescriptions.pdf in this doc you can find an official description of the speech program In the doc below you can click on the individual school name and see what sped are offered. Look in the large box on the right at the bottom. You probably don't want to have to go through all the schools but it will do the trick. Look how Goshen is listed and then look for the same info for other schools. ttp://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/spedglance/currentyear/schools.shtm |
