ultrasounds with midwives?

I'm very newly pregnant and plan to give birth with a midwives practice. Do they typically recommend ultrasounds as part of their care? I will definitely ask my midwife at my first appointment, but since that's not for a few more weeks--I thought I'd ask DCUMers.

Thank you!

I had midwives for both my pregnancies (in two different states) and had ultrasounds each time as well as the standard glucose challenge screening test for gestational diabetes. We opted out of genetic testing but that was just us, not the midwives' choice.

I'm 15 wks into my 2nd preg (1st was with an OB) and I had an ultrasound at my first appt. with my midwife. I also had an U/S at 11-12 wks with an OB when I went for my nuchal test. I plan to have another at my 20 wk anatomy scan. Congrats!

Which practice are you with? Birthcare does not recommend ultrasound routinely, although you would definitely have one if there was some indication for one or even if you just wanted to have one. I don't know what the DC Birth Center and Midwifery Care Associates do -- probably at least one sono during your pregnancy. If you are with a midwife who practices with OB's, then you will have as many sonograms as that practice usually does.

Midwifery Care Assoc--I requested one in the first trimester just to be sure that there was only one fetus (she wrote on the order "for date confirmation" or something like that) and it was no problem. Had one at 20 weeks for fetal anatomy. I'm sure you could opt out if you weren't interested, but I was. I deferred the NT testing. Had another one (today!) at 32 weeks as I have gestational diabetes, and there are more to come because of that!

I was with Birthcare, and the only reason I had an US was to rule out twins when I measured big for dates.

I am 15 weeks and have had one u/s so far, at 13 weeks, because we couldn't hear the heartbeat via Doppler.

My midwife uses medical technology sparingly but when necessary, which I appreciate. She'll also be giving us a referral for a high-frequency u/s at 19 weeks or so.
