Summer SACC- what is it like?

Anonymous
Our daughter is currently enrolled in before and after-SACC, but is only in the aftercare portion for 15-20 minutes. I believe they do arts/crafts after she's gone, so she doesn't really have any sense of what kind of activities really happen.

We have the chance to enroll her in our son's summer camp portion, which takes ages 3-7. Their schools are very close to each other, so while it'd obviously be much easier to have both at the same location, it's not a huge deal to have them separate if summer SACC is really worth it.

Do you find that many of the same school year SACC kids go to SACC in the summer? It'd be nice to keep her with her friends, if possible.

Our experience has been that not many of the regular SACC kids attend summer SACC. Also, most schools do not have summer SACC, and we have been in a different school each summer depending on which ones are designated for the program. It is mostly arts and crafts type stuff, they do have a field trip once per week. Primary advantage for us it the cost, much cheaper than other summer camp options.

we love sacc during the year for our 5 and 7 year old, but skip it in the summer. it is usually mixed up from several schools and often not at the base school. we send them to their former preschool which is a smaller more supervised type of classroom thing. we don't want to burn them out on SACC since they go all year. we find a lot of kids take a break from SACC in the summer, with sports camps and vacations etc. if you have another option to mix it up, i'd stick with that. the friends at sacc will return in the fall.

That's kind of a waste for your child to be in SACC both for you and because others who need the space longer could really use it. Do you both work the required hours? Seems you could save a lot more by not doing before school SACC.

OP here. Yes, we both work the required hours- both full-time with one hour commutes. We just stagger our schedules and I leave my house at 545am so that I can pick up as soon as I can. Depending on traffic and whether I need to stay late, I can be right on time to pick her up or an hour later than usual. We need before sacc- school doesn't start until 9am and my husband can't drop her off and commute downtown- his work does not allow him to start that late.
