MDIPA coverage

I know there was a great thread not too long ago about BCBS coverage (federal employee) for maternity care and the pros/cons. How about MD IPA?

Unfortunately, BCBS (federal employee) doesn't cover the Inova Hospital network (which is where my doc has priviledges and I'm literally 2 miles from Inova Fair Oaks) so we opted to go with MDIPA. Please tell me we did the right thing and others have had "success" with MDIPA for L&D, maternity, pediatricians, dental, etc.

I had MDIPA coverage for my first pregnancy and have kept it for my second pregnancy. I have never had any problems with accessing providers. I love that you pay only one co-pay per pregnancy for regular visits (not specialists like high risk docs) and that I have only paid one co-pay for DS (although we have been to the pediatrician for countless sick and well-baby visits). The only bugaboo is that you need permission from your primary care provider to visit the ER or urgent care. We just paged the doc on duty and got permission immediately.

Yes, we were reading about the "one-time" co payment perks too. Good reminder about the ER permission. We've always had BCBS either through my employers and now DH's job so going with any other insurance company was strange and unfamiliar. So thanks.

Sorry, I'm a little late on this topic but....I had no problems with MDIPA regarding my pregnancy and birth of my son. The only thing I did not like, is that MDIPA would pay for u/s done in the OB's office - so I had to be sent somewhere else. I got the impression that other insurance companies may allow that - which would could be very convenient. There have been a couple of other instances where certain things that could be done in the doctor's office had to "out-sourced" someplace else.

I just delivered at Fairfax in Oct. MDIPA covered most everything. My OB did songs at every visit (twins). We had to pay $150 per night in the hospital in addition to the $100 per night private room fee.

OP again.
Thanks for the replies. Our MDIPA coverage kicks in 1/1/09 and I have my 20 week (well 22 week) u/s coming up so I'll be sure to ask about that.

Glad to read no problems yet - I assume the newborn pediatrician visits are equally "easy"?

MDIPA is great for babies and kids!! I never paid a cent (or copay) for my ped's visits in the hospital and never pay a copay for "well baby" and "well child" visits at the ped's office. Somehow, I don't even pay a copay for sick child visits and I thought I had to.

I am a federal ee with MDIPA and always pay $30 each time I have my monthly appts. Should I not be paying? I go to Physicians & Midwives and they always ask for my co-pay and I never really questioned it. How do I prove to the drs office that I don't need to pay each time? TIA!

PP- your practice may be considered a specialist group where you have to pay $30 at each visit. However, if they are your standard OB/ GYN group, you should only have to pay one time per pregnancy. When I started going to a new practice, they attempted to collect a co-pay at each visit until I set them straight.

I think it depends on the employer and how they choose the benefits. I have Optimum Choice (under United HealthCare the same as is MDIPA) and I have a copay at every visit. And I've verified with the insurance company twice that I am indeed responsible for a copay each time.

Definitely ask though, PP paying multiple copays -- we have MDIPA and thus pay no pediatrician copays, but I had to point this out at least 10 times until the desk staff at our peds wrote it in big letters on our file and stopped asking. DH didn't know any better and paid what they asked, and then I had to fuss for a refund. So it's worth looking into!
