Toys to Bring on Vacation

Anonymous
We are traveling with our 15 month old for the first time by flying. We will be away for a week and so wanted thoughts on what toys we should bring that are easy to handle/pack and will entertain for a week (and possibly on a plane). On other trips we have driven and just thrown stuff into the car.

Also, if anyone has thoughts on good foods to bring on the plane, that would be great.

Is your child into little people? For several years, we'd pack a few handfuls of toy people and animals whenever we'd travel. We also got a small baby doll (5-6 inches tall) that went with us on trips. Our kids are now 3 and 5 but still have fun with "travel baby" sometimes.

A mix of new and old toys. What worked for our trip, child around the same age, were matchbox cars, books, a ball, and the "fridge DJ," a little boombox "radio" that plays songs and lights up.

But honestly, we spent most of the time walking around, even in the hotel. That was super-fun for my child (not so much for me)

Don't know where you are going, but on our last few vacations we have rented a tub of toys from babysaway.com. Pretty cheap and the toys are great and tailored to our children's ages. It is like having a whole new set of toys. And they deliver.

Could you give a ballpark of what a bucket of toys cost to rent? Or does it vary depending on the age of the child or destination? I usually order a new toy (about $30-40) and have it shipped to our destination (if we are staying for a long time). The toy doesn't always make it back with us (depending on how much room we have left in our luggage). And so I'm wondering if renting toys are a better option. It would be less wasteful.
