| I'm trying to find a book I remember from my childhood to give as a Christmas gift -- I think it would be for the elementary-school-aged kid (I remember reading this and loving it when I was about 8 or 9), and it was about a woman who ran an owl sanctuary. There was a hoot owl named Grandma, and a chapter about burrowing owls. I believe that it was non-fiction. It was a chapter book with a few illustrations scattered throughout. I've searched all over the internet and bookshops for this and haven't had any luck. Thanks. |
| how old are you, OP? That would help us figure out how old the book is |
| This isn't it, but Hoot by Carl Hiassen is great. |

google
out of print children's books you get stuff like this:http://oldchildrensbooks.com/booksearch?title_op=allwords&title=owl |
| Could it be any of these? http://www.simpleasthatblog.com/2012/10/24-owl-books-for-kids.html |
I'm 35. I read this book sometime in the mid-1980s. |
No, none of these, but thanks anyway -- some of these books look nice. The book I am remembering was for older children, not a picture book. |
|
I dunno but these two look promising:

Thanks, PP. I'll give that a try. I remember the book, just can't remember the darn title -- drives me nuts. And it was such a good book too. I also remember that this book was the first time I ever learned of burrowing owls. |
Not those either, but thank you for trying. I do appreciate everyone's help. |

| No, none of these so far appear to be the book. My recollection is that the book is a chapter book narrated in the first person by the lady who runs the owl refuge out of her home. |
|
where was the owl refuge, OP (like in a particular state? Like on their Minnesota farm?
Give us details; it's fun helping you look! BTW I bet we would be friends IRL. I read a book called "That Quail Robert" when I was a kid (chapter book). I never forgot it, it made such an impression. I gave the book to my kids. Before you knew it, we had an incubator and an egg. Now we have a little pet quail who putters around our house... |
For the life of me I can't remember where the refuge was. I want to say it was Minnesota because of the burrowing owls but I could be wrong. And the narrator (the woman who owned the refuge) lived alone -- at least, I don't remember her mentioning that she had a family living with her. Just the great horned owl named Grandma, and the other owls. And I'm looking up that Quail book you mentioned right now, so thanks for the tip -- if DCUM can't find the book for me, maybe I'll gift That Quail Robert instead. |
