I bought yams, so I thought, at Whole Foods. Just baked one up. Cut into it and OMG it's purple inside! A beautiful, royal purple! Testing…tastes like a yam.
Is it a yam or a sweet potato or something else? Bigger question: is a yam the same thing as a sweet potato or are they different? Thanks! |
| It's a Japanese sweet potatoe. Love those too. |
| It's a sweet potato. We don't have real yams here in the US. |
| I thought Japanese sweet potatoes were the ones that are purple on the outside and yellow on the inside. Sounds like this one is purple on the inside? |

OP here--one or two weeks ago I bought the one that was purple on the outside and yellow on the inside. yummy. So I thought this was the same thing, but this is purple on the outside and inside.
This one would look awesome if cooked up with the usual (are they garnet, or jewel) yams that are orange inside. I'm taking one and putting it in a jar on the windowsill to grow it, because I fear I'll never see it again. |

OP here. Sorry. I'm junking up my own post. But just wanted to say:

Good to know. Thanks, I was curious.
So it turns out that purple sweet potato you have is -- a purple sweet potato!
