I work in an elementary school. We sometimes refer to that grade as "kinder" (with a short i) when we're talking to one another in shorthand.

Actually you wouldn't say "kinder kid." You're not in a school setting. And it's not an adjective. It's shorthand for kindergarten. If someone asked, "What grade is Larla in?"a teacher might respond quickly and say, "She's in kinder." Or someone in the school office might say, "It looks like kinder is just getting back from their field trip."
