I am looking for a pair of kittens to adopt, and so I'm getting my house ready. Please recommend the best kitty litter and kitty box. I was looking at the top 3 automatic kitty litter boxes, but that will have to wait since they all cost $300 and up. I'm looking for as low-maintenance as possible, but am willing to scoop if there are no affordable automatic ones. I am hearing the crystal kitty litter is best for minimal dust and best "clumping." |
Get an enclosed litter box; with or without a filter, the lid keeps in lot of the smell.
I really liked Space kitty litter from Trader Joe's because it is totally unscented yet you can't smell the litter box at all. You have to scoop the poop and the pee gets absorbed by the scilica. However, we have asthma issues and it seems to be a trigger. I also liked World's Best Kitty Litter because it has a pleasant, natural odor and you also can't smell the box in the house. But the cats track the litter out of the box on their paws, and it also triggered asthma symptoms. We now use Yesterday's News, which is so-so. You can't smell the box but I completely switch out all the litter every few days. Good luck. |
I agree with getting an enclosed box with a filter; it helps a lot. I didn't like the crystal litter because when it got tracked out of the box it was like gravel all over the house. Now I use Fresh Step, which seems all right as long as I change it every few days. It also gets tracked out, but it's not as hard as the crystals. |
You might try Tidy Cat's new Breeze system. I think to set up your box the first time, it is $30 for the box itself and $8 for the litter. The box has a grate on the bottom which allows the pee to go through to a pee pad liner drawer sitting underneath the grate. Change these once per week. All you're left with is scooping the poop daily (no pee clumps), so there's no odor. The pellets are some kind of plastic-y things so there shouldn't be any asthma issues and no tracking cat litter on their paws either.
I haven't tried it yet but as soon as I run out of my 14 lb tub of cat litter (another benefit, you never have to lug those blasted tubs again!) I'm going to. If you go to Tidy Cat Breeze's website there's a coupon for $10 off the system and $2 off the litter refills. Good luck! So glad to hear you are getting 2 kittens. It's so much better to take two to have a buddy during the day, and to keep them active later. |
Agree w/enclosed box with filter. I think the world's best kitty litter is great. And have fun with the new kittens! hooray - |
I don't like the automatic litter boxes, sometimes they have problems. My cats don't like things that make noise like that, either. It's not that bad having to clean out the regular box. I use a large pan and Fresh Step silicone crystals litter. I check it for poops every morning and evening, and flush those down the toilet. Since it doesn't clump, I just swirl around the litter to cover up any pee. I completely change it 2 times a week on trash days. Each time I change it, I use 1/2 of the Fresh Step container.
I used to use the clumping litter, but it got tracked all over the house. And my cat used to get it stuck between his toes and it was really hard to it get out. He also had some problem that the vet said was associated with breathing in the clay dust. Supposively the clay dust builds up in their lungs from breathing it in, and in their bladders from licking it off their furn, and hardens. My cat had a bladder problem. That's why we switched to silicone crystals, and I ended up liking it a lot better, and he didn't have any more issues after that. I also prefer the covered boxes, but my younger cat won't use the box if it's covered. So I just have an open pan. |
Unscented arm and hammer litter is the best. No dust. Trust me, no dust is really important. |
fresh scoop is best., and booda litter box. they are round, take up less space and covered. |
so many choices! The foster kitty mom gave her Fresh Step, so I'll see how that goes. They are soooo cute! I love my new blue Russian kittens...Kiska and Arlavsky...haah! THe names still crack me up. Now I hope they catch the mouse in my house! |
Feline Pine is the best by far--very little tracking, no smell at all. You have to scoop the poop out every day, but otherwise, you just change the litter out every week. It's cheap too. I have tried almost every litter on the market--I have three cats--and this is the only one that works for us. And it's better for the environment than clay.
