MCPS is purposefully putting regional magnets in schools further away from W schools in hopes that less of them will opt to go to the magnets due to distance. Oh wait, no, it's because historically, magnets are put in low performing schools to attract higher performing students, even though MCPS (and a PP) stated that there are equally high achieving students in every school. /s |
They don't become closer if you cut the number of regions in half. |
People aren’t “bias”. They might have bias or show bias but they are “biased”. It’s amazing how many people have such a poor grasp of English. |
So they have to sacrifice on both distance and program quality. |
Come on, this is a public forum and people type quickly. Nobody should be so snobbish to pick on other’s English typos. |
“Bias” isn’t a typo. It’s like the verbs “loan” and “loose”. It’s very common and people who use these in the nonstandard way believe their way is standard. |
Or by moving SMCS west to drastically reduce the average commute. |

SMCS provides connections to internships! They have established relationships with labs, and a whole semester class on “getting an internship”! Similarly with the courses that are otherwise only available at enrichment centers. SMCS is providing a public opportunity to give students access to what rich parents give their kids at home, and doing it without substantial expense. Why would you oppose that??? The rich parents can supplement from any school, and doing care about saving a bit of dosh to get it at the public. The non rich families get a huge benefit! |
What’s your definition of “rich”? |
Not close, but closer, compared to the distance to Blair, for example. Churchill-Wheaton is 6.7 miles, while Churchill to Blair is 11.1 miles. Wootton-Kennedy is 9.4 miles, while Wootton-Blair is 13.4 miles. |
One of the people in charge of the regional model planning (allegedly) said it would likely end right outside of the 6/24 BOE meeting |
You have to look at commute time at rush hour. Wootton to Kennedy has mostly local roads (unless you go ICC then the distance becomes 17.7 miles) while to Blair has 495. It’s certainly more bus time to go to Kennedy than Blair. Wheaton and Churchill are the same situation as bus has to commute on Randolph rd with slow speed and many traffic lights, while to Blair it’s conveniently through 495. |
Blair is also easy to access via public transportation given the Rapid bus that runs down Colesville from Silver Spring Metro, and will be even more accessible when the Purple Line opens. |
No, they allegedly said that Blair would serve a smaller region. That's what all this drama about 'the destruction of Blair as we know it" is about |
This is for all MCPS high schools. Some schools will struggle to get enough kids for these. This is not the magnet list. |
