The others you cite are expensive but you can get athletic, some merit, some stack athletic and merit and there may be aid also. Depends on the school. However, if you don’t need $$ at all, it also doesn’t take from 12.5 scholarships the coach is trying allocate. It doesn’t take away from being a great player to get the offer, but makes it cleaner and more simple. The family also can decide fast because they are not waiting for more information on aid and looking/comparing net cost calculations to see if they can afford the school.

So saying - look Cap wins because the most Ivies fast - or high academic fast - ignores this piece.

So all the Ivy recruits are full pay?

Correct. Full pay or qualify for financial aid (but no merit or athletic).

So, this may not be widely known but there are private or alumni funded scholarship at Ivies for athletic recruits. Some are earmarked for specific sports like WLAX or men’s Water Polo. Some are for any athlete who meets certain criteria. They are handed out judiciously and can go to what someone called “donut hole families.” If they want your daughter badly enough and money is the only obstacle, there are resources the coach can turn to and it happens every year.

How is this allowed? Or
is it not allowed, and are the ivies that do it in violation of Ivy League rules?

This is really interesting and didnt know about this.

I have seen that - maybe in boys rosters though - at schools like UVA and Notre Dame where it is an endowed scholarship (and listed/disclosed that a player was the recipient). I wasn’t sure that the Ivy League allowed that though??

Not sure the league can prohibit it (without getting sued).

Donors can contribute money for endowments and specific majors or areas of study, making that accessible to a coach.

The bottom line is that if you want an athletic scholarship, don't target Ivy League schools with high academic standards. Instead, choose a school that fits your player's skill level, academic level, and your financial priorities. I suspect any of these players going to Ivy League schools could get into any of these other schools for an athletic scholarship or partial, but specifically chose high academic Ivy League school for their own personal reasons. No matter what school your kid goes to it is an honor and amazing to be playing a sport at ANY COLLEGE. Overall a little over 7% of high school athletes (about 1 in 13) go on to play a varsity sport in college and less than 2% of high school athletes (1 in 57) go on to play at NCAA Division I schools.

This goes blatantly against the Ivy League charter and if it happening in any sort of systematic process, the school would be caught. I played football, started three years and won two Ivy League championships. Guess what I did every single year? Filled out my FAFSA.

You are trying to act like Mr Big Time and impress by sounding like you are an insider and in your know. Every Ivy leaguer knows are ridiculous traditions are more important than anything. No coach or school President would ever risk their reputation for lacrosse. I’d they heard about studying like this, they would vigorously end it.
