ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Who knows. Anyone with a brain would not have said a thing until they got approval. I think their statements killed the move because of the way they did it. My view is that this issue is now dead.

I listened to the podcasts, they don’t like it, partially because one of the guys kids was going to be trapped and “didn’t understand”. Partially because it made more work for the Clubs.
But all they said was it was a hot topic that they should probably research more.
I’m the parent of a trapped player and have plenty of issues with ECNL, but 24 pages of people expecting them to change something and now being offended because they haven’t seems like Classic DCUM problem not ECNLs

US SOCCER EMAIL today:

Club Admins & Coaches,

Background

In 2015, U.S. Soccer announced Player Development Initiatives (i.e., PDIs) focused on improving the approach to player development practices. PDIs are developed through international and domestic best practices, research and data, and stakeholder feedback.

In 2017, PDIs were officially rolled out to U.S. Soccer members. As part of these PDIs, U.S. Soccer made a determination to make player registration tied to year of birth (i.e., January 1 to December 31), as opposed to the school year the player is in.

The purpose of moving to birth year registration includes driving clarity on domestic calendars, improving understanding about development progress/culture, and enhancing playing environments.

About This Survey

U.S. Soccer is soliciting feedback about the birth year registration PDI to determine positives and challenges, particularly as it relates to participation and player development. It is U.S. Soccer's responsibility to help facilitate positive experiences for participants while safeguarding the long-term development of the sport at all levels. This includes better understanding how registration (i.e., birth year vs. school year) affects growing the game, fostering best playing environments, and developing winning teams.

Our Ask

As clubs, coaches, and administrators, you know your playing environment extremely well, and we need you to provide your perspective, evidence / data, and anecdotes that will help U.S. Soccer make the best decisions around registration for the player.

Please complete the survey by clicking the button below by August 15, 2024 – it should only take 5-7 minutes.

Thanks everyone,
Simon

Who is "They" and where is this documented?

They was the president and vice president of ECNL. Episode 96 3 min in take a listen.

Also my club in Oregon was just sent a questionnaire for US soccer about changing things and what are club thinks would be most effective SY or BY.

Where's the eye-rolling emoji

- must be new here

After all this discussion I wish there were more actual facts/statements/press releases, but the smoke is there.

Where there is smoke you usually find fire. Hearing from people who have real influence of which I have none just a spectator and fly on the wall. There has been behind the scenes conversations before the podcast from ECNL for all US youth soccer to go back to SY. This has been the closest things have been to real change. A select group of clubs will receive questionnaires from US soccer about what they think. ECNL president is pushing hard and has been collecting data since 2018 to now and has already sent that in.

The wheels are now in motion and we should know by November after thanksgiving if change is coming for Fall 25/26 or 26/27.

If 26/27 is approved ECNL is ready to start a hybrid program that is similar to bio banding but not exact same to get their program ready for a change.

If 25/26 then everyone will make the change all together.

Or US soccer finds the data to be inconclusive and will keep things the same for the foreseeable future.

I listened to the entire podcast. As the parent of a younger Oct birthday I hope this happens. But up until the post of the email today there hasn't been anything even moving in the direction of this happening.

None of this makes sense. They have a survey out. Aug 15 was the date to return it. It will be September 15 but more probably September 30 before they have in the responses they want. They will need to study those and talk to stakeholders. If this works like normal, they will have a position in the spring. 25/26 is out. Feedback may be to keep like is. This is a thought. A lot more needs to go into it before anything happens.

Why you on DCum?
Anonymous
I don't see how this can happen when school cuttoff dates are all over the place. Some states/counties it is December, others August.

It will stay birth year.

I saw another suggestion to have the age be graduation year.

At least the kids affected by the prior change will have aged out of they change things back. Parent of a July boy, went from being the very youngest to being an average age.

Yes why are you here. And also a large LA area club director would have no more information than we all do. They are not involved with this. They could advocate a view if they knew how and cared which they probably do not but that is all.

Some people are more connected to the decision makers than others. Not impossible that a large club would know about a potential change.

I spoke with a coach at Slammers while our son’s team was at surf cup. He said that it sounds like it is a possibility and wouldn’t be surprised if they made the switch for all club soccer for 25/26.
