Kindergarteners in aftercare.

Anonymous
I am a bit concerned about my child in aftercare being one of the youngest among minimally supervised kids.
A friend of mine decided on Nursery school K so that this would not be an issue, her child would be the oldest.

Has anyone had any trouble with a young child being bullied or adversely influence in aftercare?

We chose an elementary school with good aftercare - the kindergarteners were segregated from the big kids until April.

I have two kids who are younger (than second grade) who have been in aftercare since PK, and there has never been any kind of issue like this.

Your use of the term "minimally supervised" raises concern. There are still required staff:student ratios even in aftercare. In a well-run program, being the youngest child shouldn't be cause for concern, it could even be developmentally advantageous for the right child. Bottom line: bullying is never acceptable and neither is minimal supervision. You should discuss your concerns with the school's director immediately.

At DS' school in Arlington, the kindergarteners have their own room
