Seeing a therapist?

Anonymous
I've been pretty depressed lately. Went to the doctor and got Zoloft. She wanted me to talk to a therapist. I've never done this and feel very awkward about it. I'm thinking about canceling my appointment. I wouldn't know what to say to her. I live a pretty good life and am not sure I'm ready to dissect it. My DH is a very happy person and he doesn't understand why I'm not always 100% so that's why my doctor thought I'd benefit from a therapist.

Has a therapist helped any of you? Comments/Suggestions?

Yes! You should absolutely go. I went for anxiety, & sometimes, we may not know on the surface what is causing the anxiety & depression. Go for yourself & your family. It can only help.

Please go. If you try it and don't feel a connection with this one or you don't like his/her style shop around. With the right therapist it can really make a difference. You need to feel comfortable and not judged.

You should also know that therapy has changed over the years. Most therapists aren't going to do psychoanalysis and dissect every aspect of your life. Make sure the therapist does cognitive behavioral therapy, which is focused on getting you out of negative thinking patterns and giving you the skills to cope with everyday life.

My husband sees a therapist and he's never been happier. He says that they never talk about his past, they just work on making him think more positively. We can both tell the difference for sure.
