Getting a Breastfed baby to take Poly-Vi-Sol

Anonymous
DD is exclusively breastfed except for a bottle every couple of days when she seems hungry after nursing. On the days, I give her a bottle, it's easy to put the poly-vi-sol in the formula. However, what do I do on the days when she does not have a bottle. She tremendously dislikes the taste.

Why are you giving poly-vi-sol? Is she iron deficient? If the supplement is only for Vitamin D than try Tri vi sol- it's much better tasting !

The Poly-Vi-Sol I'm using does not contain iron. Thanks for letting me know that Tri Vi Sol is much better tasting. i try that instead.

Or you could buy the vitamin D drops for baby if it is only for vitamin D. You put one drop only on a pacifier or nipple and let them suck it off.

I gave my baby tri-vi-sol and she used to suck it down like it was candy. When I switched to tri-vi-sol with iron, she hated it. I've never tried poly-vi-sol, but maybe it tastes funkier. My multi-vitamin tastes funky - but vitamin C tablets are yummy.

Agree that a BF baby should be getting enough iron. Poly does taste bad. DD did fine with Tri-Vi-Sol.

Hm... my daughter hated tri-vi-sol. I could never get her to take it without throwing it back up.

DD1 loved her vitamins, but DD2, not so much. I just kept giving them to her and then acting super happy when she took them: DD took her vitamins! What a good girl! Oh, such yummy vitamins! Yay, DD! I still keep it up, although I've toned it down a bit and she's mostly taking them well.

My baby also hated poly-vi-sol. I just switch to tri and he loves it!

Make sure to get the Tri-Vi-Sol without iron, the package looks similar. The with iron is heinous, I tried it myself.

I'm not the poster who wrote the above post, but I bought vitamin D drops ("Just D") at the Breastfeeding Center in DC on K Street. You could probably find them other places too, but I'm not sure where.

This is not entirely accurate. Somewhere around 4 months or so, about 25% of breastfed babies are iron deficient, per AAP. It is for this reason that pediatricians push the use of iron-fortified infant cereal between 4 and 6 months.

I got the Carlson Baby D drops (400 IU per drop) from Knowles Apothecary in Kensington.
