Maternity\Nursing Bras - Help

Anonymous
I'm 33 weeks and my boobs are getting bigger by the day. I feel like I need more support but I'm wondering if it is too early to get fitted for nursing bras. I can't imagine how big they are going to be once my milk comes in. I'd appreciate any advice on the topic.

TIA

That is the one nice thing about pregnancy especially if you've been small chested your whole life (like me). Hubby got a real kick out of it and still does since I'm nursing...ok TMI good thing I'm anonymous

If you need support, definitely get something you are comfortable in. Avoid underwires especially for the bras you will be nursing with - they can cause clogged ducts (very painful!).

The folks at Nordstrom are very good with sizing and fitting.

I think you need to buy new bras so you are comfortable, and you may as well have them be nursing bras at this point. You will definitely grow more, and how much more is unpredictable. Any bra you go through on "the way up" you can also wear "on the way down."

In my opinion, better to spend money on decent bras than on fancy baby clothes that get worn for three weeks.

As for the underwire avoidance: if they fit well, the wire is far from ducts. If you are chesty, there's no avoiding the underwire.

I had to get my nursing bras around the same time to you, and they still fit me fine. I got a few different ones, so there was some give. If you get fitted by someone who knows what they are doing, they will guide you on proper sizing. I went to the Breastfeeding Center on K St, and they were great.

33 weeks is too early to know what you'll be after birth - I think the Breastfeeding center recommends waiting until 37 weeks. That said, you may want to buy a few nursing bras now for comfort - even if they don't fit during your first few months of nursing, your breasts will get smaller if you nurse past a certain point (like 6 months), and you would probably wear the bras then. (I know by that point, my bras were so stretched out that they really didn't provide much support.)

I bought bra extenders at motherhood to give me some more room- normally a d - 2 days after birth- a J- not kidding- I would wait

I just went to the Breastfeeding Center, located on K St. NW yesterday for a prenatal group to learn more about breastfeeding, etc. They offer a wide selection of bras and do free bra fittings. I highly recommend going there and do not think it is too early- there were many women who were around the same week as you.
Good luck.

I spent way too much money on nursing bras from Mimi's when breastfeeding did not work out for us. Bought nude, white, black, etc. in multiple sytles.I would certainly buy a couple, but know that your size and situation might change. I found the crossover ones to work nicely, even though they have less support. They were good those first few weeks when you are wearing the same outfit (oversized button down shirt, for me) and robe every day!

when you buy your nursing bras, i recommend just buying two in different styles. i can't remember exactly when I bought mine, but I'd gotten bigger YET AGAIN and needed new bras toward the end, so I just went with the nursing bras. When I was still pregnant, I loved the "sleeping" style crossover bra and hated the more traditional nursing bra with the flaps. After birth, my preferences flipped. I even slept in the regular bra (which I needed to do more for leakage issues than actual support) and sent my mom to the store to stock up on those. Maybe I'm odd, but I did the majority of my growing in the boob area while I was pregnant and didn't change much after delivery. Then again, going from 34A to a 36D was probably plenty. My mom actually called from the store to make sure she'd heard my size correctly b/c the bras weren't returnable and she didn't believe I could be that big!
