Wootton HS Modernization or redistricting? What have you heard?

Anonymous
I just got an email from my HOA saying that in an effort to address Wootton's overcrowding the school board is considering zoning out everyone east of Wootton Pkwy and sending them to Richard Montgomery. This would include me and about half of Lakewood ES and ALL of Fallsmead ES and certainly some other schools.

I'm wondering what other parents have heard about the situation. I'm going to attend tonight's school board meeting and hopefully learn more. DH and I bought here because of Wootton (which is an easy walk from our house) and will not send our daughter to RM. If the redistricting takes place we'll look into private schools.

Ugh!!

I think RM is a really good school and I only wish we could afford to live in that area. !

I am a future RM parent and am now concerned about crowding at RM. We have lived through crowded elementary and middle and were looking forward to High school which was supposed to remain just about capacity. I hope this does not happen for RM's sake. And clearly OP would not be a good thing for the cluster..

Overcrowding is becoming a problem all over MCPS. Keep in mind they are also planning a new H.S. due to the new development at Crown Farm. So that will change the numbers/boundaries some as well. Although that is some years down the road.

There is a BOE Boundaries and Facilities meeting tonight 7pm in the Carver Building. Wootton reps are speaking out against any boundary changes and delays. Your PTA should be trying to get parents to come out to this.

I don't understand. Wootton seems like one of the only clusters that is not experiencing overcrowding in Moco?

I'm not downplaying the concern, but why is there a huge deal over redistricting/new h.s construction? There clearly is a problem with overcrowding that cannot be ignored. My view is that any new school being constructed is a response to new housing development/population boom in the area. Since the majority of new development is geared toward higher SES households, their children will likely make up the majority of these schools. Additionally, MCPS as pretty high standards for its teachers and the PTAs will likely be very involved. Just take a look at the super zips article in the Post earlier this week. If the schools are being built in these zips, I don't think there's a lot to worry about.

I am also not that concerned. With a child in K - I actually kind of assume something will change during her public school years. I assumed that even when purchasing the house. I think it would be short-sighted not to consider that boundary changes are going to happen knowing the growth in this area.

There is a formal boundary study for Wooton?

I call bullsh**. Sounds like scaremongering to me. RM is currently projected to have a greater capacity problem than Wootton in 5-10 years, and any Wootton problems can be dealt with by slightly increasing the new Wootton, which is still projected to open in 2022.

For the record, all of Fallsmead is not east of Wootton Pkwy. A good chuck is west/south.

This a meeting to cover boundaries/facilities for virtually every cluster in the county. Wootton has 5 minutes on the agenda, in which the Wootton PTA members will give their usual speech against hypothetical proposals that nobody has proposed. There's really no need for parents to attend this. Everyone in MCPS is already aware that nobody in the Wootton cluster wants to be tainted by the "less desirables" who are currently zoned for RM, GBurg and QO.
