I have an ADT system and I am now past the three year contract period. I was planning to cancel but am having second thoughts even though I have not turned on the alarm in 6 months.
Any good experiences with ADT when you were really glad you had it? Or is it a waste--never on when you need it, doesn't work fast enough? TIA |

bump.
I really need help. I can't decide whether or not I should keep it. |

I have an alarm system and use it every day--in addition to the break-in protection, I like having a centralized smoke alarm that would call the fire department even when I am not at home.
My service is not through ADT. |
| No alarm. Ccdc. |
|
| We have an adt sign and an OPEN alert goes off when a door/window is open. The actual system isn't activated but I suspect it'd scare someone off. |
| It's kind of like insurance - you hate paying for it until you need it, and then you're really glad you had it. I'm a single mom, so I feel more secure with the alarm. Now if only I could get the nanny to figure out how to use it... |
What's that? |

ADT is horrible, endless price increases, serial billing errors on their part and then referring our account to collection after ADT told me not to pay the bill until we got a revised bill (which took them 2 months to send out)... I fired them.
The home security people I know don't think much of ADT. I would recommend any other company. We switched to Guardian. I have no affiliation other than as a paying customer but we pay 20%+ less per month for a better system (that was able to reuse the existing contacts we had to reduce the installation cost). I mainly have it for fire alarm protection and calling that in, secondarily for safeguarding valuables when we're away. We rarely turn it on when we are home, baseball bats & other protective measures are in place. ;-o |
If I lived in DC no matter where I would have an alarm. |
| i have liked our adt service. good overt he phone cutsomer service. good reps. when we moved, we asked our inspector which security company was best and he said they're all about the same, |

We have Simplisafe. No contract, portable, easy to install. $15 a month for monitoring.
http://simplisafe.com/ But to answer your question, I probably would not renew. Lawn and window signs indicating you have an alarm are a big deterrent in themselves. And can't you arm it so an alarm triggers if a door is opened? it just doesn't tell the alarm company if you don't renew, right? |

We don't have ADT, but have had our GE system for a few years. It is like insurance. Our neighbors have a similar system, theirs went of once during the day and the police were there within 5 minutes, arrested the guy as he was running out. No way would we go without.
We're in Bethesda, fwiw. |
| It's probably a waste of money, but having an alarm system makes me feel safer. |
I'm in SE DC, no alarm here. |
