Transfer of schools for IB program

Anonymous
We just moved to MoCo from FFX. In FFX if your home school is an AP school and you want IB, you can request a transfer. Or if your home school is IB and you want AP, you can request a transfer. Providing space is available, the request is usually granted. Can this also be done in Mont Co?

I think all high schools offer AP's. Some offer IB (much fewer). Richard Montgomery's IB is a very competitive county side magnet. If your child is past 8th grade it is probably too late for that. I am not sure that IB alone would be a reason for MCPS to allow the transfer. Space is rarely available anywhere.

It depends on where you live. If you're within one of the consortia (downcounty: Wheaton, Northwood, Einstein, Kennedy, Blair or northeast: Springbrook, Paint Branch, Blake) you can indicate that the IB diploma school - Einstein, Kennedy, Springbrook - in your consortium is the first choice school for high school. Rockville, Watkins Mill, Seneca Valley, and B-CC have IB diploma programs that are open to students residing within their boundary areas. Depending on the school, there may be a possibility of requesting a change of school assignment to a nearby IB diploma program if space is available.

Richard Montgomery is a test-in magnet program starting in 9th grade. There is also an opportunity for neighborhood students to participate in the diploma program at Richard Montgomery if they have participated in IB Middle Years from middle school on -

Thanks. We're zoned for Walter Johnson. I will look into the test option, but it sure would be nice if more schools offered the IB option. It is such a nice well rounded program.
