i want to learn to knit

can any of you recommend a book or set that can teach me the very basics. also, is it a good idea to go to a place like stitchdc for a lesson- or how did you learn to knit?

I think Michael's (the craft store chain) offers a variety of classes (knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking for adults and kids).

I have also seen knitting meetup groups on www.meetup.com that meet in DC/VA/MD areas.

This is exactly what I was going to say. You should also check out all the available knitting videos online. I learned a lot from watching those.

I went to Stitch DC and I find the hands on help REALLY invaluable.

I learned on my own from the book Stitch n bitch which was recommended by a friend. Ditto on the youtube videos when you get stuck.

The various counties offer knitting classes through the park service class books. There are also several great dvds. Also check you tube for free instructionals.

I've learned to knit years and years ago in my country. I went to classes because I'm not good following books directions. I knit plenty of sweaters and cardigans for me and other people (I used to sell them), but now that I'd like to knit sweaters for my unborn baby I need help, too.
