The primary reason is that being anonymous allows people to ask questions/have discussions about topics that they could not if there were a risk that someone might know who they are.
Washington, DC, is a much smaller town than you might imagine. |

Candor. |
It may not be as anonymous as you think.
I was told from a reliable source that Jeff has access to the IP addresses of the computers |
Well yes, I think everyone knows that. Jeff doesn't hide the fact since that is how he calls out trolls/sock puppets. That said, I'm sure he has better things to do than try to figure out who people are based on their IP address. |
What's a sock puppet? |
One less login/password to worry about this way. |
+1 |
did you just "+1" yourself? ![]() |
Was your reliable source the FAQ on the left, which clearly states this and outlines Jeff's policy for disclosing IP addresses if needed? Because, you know, this information is all there. |
When you create an amen chorus for a position that purports to be from multiple people. i.e., you post, "abortion is murder!" and then you post again saying, "I agree!" and then you post a third time saying, "DH here. Absolutely this!" and then you post a fourth time saying, "NP. I agree that abortion is murder." Then Jeff looks at the IP addresses on the posts and calls you out as a sock puppet, and we all point at you (virtually) and laugh at your foolishness. |
pp here. of course, you can also sock puppet and argue with yourself.
"Abortion is murder!" "No, it's not! Pro-choice all the way." "NP here: You're a baby killer, pp." "Go pray the rosary, pp." etc |
You'll also see sock puppeting from people promoting a business or something.
You run a stationery business. You post, "anyone know where I can get my baby personalized stationery?" Then you wait 5 minutes and post an answer to yourself, plugging your business. Five minutes later you post a fake testimonial. Etc. |
My favorite are the ones who do this and get called out by Jeff and try to do the whole "No I'm not sock puppeting. My friend is here and I must have left the screen up and I didn't realize she posted when I wasn't looking. And then I saw a post and responded and she must have responded back next time I looked away!" |
I thought the site owner said he can't tell what poster posted what and that IP addresses don't mean much.
That's what I understood when he replied about a suicide thread. |
