Math is a good career...if you lust like numbers, accounting is good. For statistics, there is actuarial fields (predicting loss for insurance companies). In the financial industry, they use numerical models to try to predict how the stock market will go.
If you are into puzzles, cryptology. |
| I have a degree is Math and I work on IT. I would become an actuary though if you like statistics. |

Erick, you could literally become a billionaire if you're good at it and go work for a quant hedge fund on Wall Street.
I'm not joking. Google James Simons at Rennaissance Technologies. |
+1 ... If you like economics and actually understand the Math you could do well. |
| Yeah this is one of the highest average salary degrees. If you enjoy it, there is no reason to avoid it for fear it won't be profitable. |
| Oh wait you are the French fry guy |

There are more options in statistics than just being an actuary. Statisticians work in almost all fields of science and social science. Big data is a huge deal right now in business and government so if you have any interest in that you might be able to move forward in your career fast.
Operations research is another you might explore. I think it's mostly modelling. Computational biology and computational finance are other things areas you could explore. If you are thinking about going back to school, talk to the schools you are exploring about what their graduates do. Also, there is always pure math. It is hard to get a tenure track position, but it is possible. |
| This guy can't figure out how to make a french fry or how to study math. So much promise. |
| Step 1: improve your writing skills. |
| The actuarial field is shrinking as they did a lot of work on pensions and they're getting shut down. Plus, passing the exams is HARD and takes many years. So you may choose to go down that path, but I'd encourage you to peruse something else. Stats is a great field (that's what I'm in). Govt hires a lot of statisticians, but to move up you really need at least a master's or a PhD. If you do Big Data - tech field, startups, be sure to learn some programming languages. SQL for sure, I work in SAS, but there's also some newer languages that start-ups are using. Plenty of open source languages (like R). Engineering and Physics use a lot of math, so you may want to look into those as well. Econ and Finance are good paths, but Wall Street has been contracting in recent years so you’ll need to be pretty good and go to a better school to get into this market. And in this line of work, you will likely need a graduate degree, as well. |

There are tons of math jobs. NSA hires many mathematicians.
There are also many degrees in engineering that use a lot of math. (Wish I had known this, I loved math but didn't realize what engineering was since it wasn't offered in high school). My DH has an electrical engineering degree and he had numerous job offers out of college and was heavily recruited. |
| Oh and my best friend just got a masters in statistical analytics. The average job starting salary is 150k. |
| Another spammer. |
