I'm trying to make this butternut squash lasagna: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/butternut-squash-lasagna-recipe/index.html
but I am confused by the layering. This is what I understand so far, after making all the components: Layer 1: 3/4 cup of sauce Layer 2: noodles Layer 3: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 4: cheese Layer 5: sauce Then it says to layer 3 more times. But I've already used 1/3 of the squash puree. So Layer 6 should be noodles, correct? And what should I end with? It seems weird to end with noodles, or is that how it should be?? And I ended up with a lot of sauce, so I must have done something wrong. Any ideas? |
| I would end with sauce and then more cheese. Forget what the recipe says, just make sure everything gets in the pan. If you have extra sauce, just save it - might want some to drizzle on top after it bakes in case it gets too dry in the oven. |
What you have is a list of the order for how each ingredient is added to each layer. You have a list of the five ingredients that go into the first layer. Think of it like this: Layer 1a: 3/4 cup of sauce Layer 1b: noodles Layer 3c: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 4d: cheese Layer 5e: sauce Layer 2a: 3/4 cup of sauce Layer 2b: noodles Layer 2c: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 2d: cheese Layer 2e: sauce Layer 3a: 3/4 cup of sauce Layer 3b: noodles Layer 3c: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 3d: cheese Layer 3e: sauce |
Correction - you don't need double sauce at each layer. Layer 1a: 3/4 cup of sauce Layer 1b: noodles Layer 1c: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 1d: cheese Layer 1e: sauce Layer 2a: noodles Layer 2b: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 2c: cheese Layer 2d: sauce Layer 3b: noodles Layer 3c: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 3d: cheese Layer 3e: sauce Or, if you prefer: Layer 1: 3/4 cup of sauce Layer 2: noodles Layer 3: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 4: cheese Layer 5: sauce Layer 6: noodles Layer 7: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 8: cheese Layer 9: sauce Layer 10: noodles Layer 11: 1/3 of the squash puree Layer 12: cheese Layer 13: sauce |

Giada De Laurentiis recipes are poorly conceived and written.
When my DW decided she wanted to improve her cooking, she kept loving the sound of these recipes. Then she's make them and they'd be mediocre and she'd blame herself. But the issue is that most of them don't work very well (though the savory food recipes work a lot better than the baking recipes). |
| Thanks! Although that is where I am confused (to the above PP): it says layer 3 more times, but really just twice after the original layering? So I was thinking 4 layers of noodles (3 each for a total of 12)- is that not right? |
| I usually can only fit 3 layers of lasagna in a regular 13x9 pan...most are only 2 inches deep. |
Same here. I would just layer til I ran out. It doesn't need to be precise. |
| I would just layer it so it all fit and end with noodles then sauce. |
