Throw out or eat?

Anonymous
In an attempt to get a head start on dinner last night, I boiled some fresh green beans that were going to be used in a pasta dish I was making later. Boiled them and put them in a bowl to let cool with the intention of putting them in the fridge after. Came down with a massive migraine and went to bed while Dh ordered take out for him/DS. Woke up this morning and green beans were still in bowl. Can I use them tonight? They don't appear to be moldy. Or should I just chuck them. TIA

I would easily eat them.

definitely

Totally fine.

Thanks all. My mom was always paranoid about food (she would have tossed them) so I never know when I'm being overly cautious

They are fine. They live outside, after all.

Totally fine, OP!

Wow, I'm the only one who would throw them away! You all are proving the (many times confirmed by others) fact that I am overly paranoid about food safety. This is interesting to know.

I would re-rinse them and eat them.

Thanks all. If they hadn't already been boiled I wouldn't think twice about using them. The fact that they'd been cooked is what gave me pause.

I've eaten almost anything that's left out overnight. it happens a lot in our house. No issues!

You are certainly correct that any decent food safety guideline would tell you to toss these after two hours. I just think most people would ignore this advice and chance it.

I would probably thow them away too. I don't think you're being paranoid since any food sanitation guide would also tell you to throw them away. I just think most people reason that they aren't that likely to get sick, they're healthy enough that its not like they'd die if they did get sick, and replacing and re-cooking the green beans would be a big hassle.

I think there's also some wishful thinking involved though. Like I can't see any reason why so many people will store leftover pizza in the box overnight on the counter, other than that its annoying to take the pizza out of the box and wrap the individual slices. Its not like pizza cheese is somehow more toxin-resistant than other forms of dairy.

PP here. I don't get the pizza thing either! My friends used to do that so often in college. I got in a fight with H the other day about sliced deli meat that I accidentally left in my car for an hour+ after grocery shopping. He thought it was crazy I'd throw it away, but I tend not to chance stuff like that. I have a vomiting phobia and so I'm cautious about anything that could potentially make me sick.

I dunno guys, if you're gonna heat it up again, what exactly are you worried about? If you're not (like deli meat), okay I get it, but for geez sake, you can kill the extra bacteria pretty easily.
