Westgate Elementary School Experience, concerns ESOL etc...

Anonymous
We are zoned for westgate and have concerns that the elementary schools isn't as strong as we hoped.

We also have concerns that the ethnic breakdown is too diverse.

Anyone have any experience with being asian or caucasion and english speaking.

Is there any issue with ESOL.

Good luck getting helpful info here. All DCUM seems to be good for in this regard is crying "Racist!" to anyone with such concerns. Sadly.

Someone was just trolling about Westgate over on Fairfax Underground because the school was highlighting how many of its students were foreign born, which offended someone's nativist POV. Wouldn't rule out that this is another stab at that apple.

It gets a 9 on Great Schools. That doesn't tell you everything but it tells you something.

Everyone I know who has children there is very happy. It has a large involvement of parents. I wouldn't put it in the same category as nearby McLean schools, but it is a solid school.

What is the difference between mclean schools and this one? Doesn't this one feed McLean.

Would you consider private until the 8th grade?

OP here can you provide the thread I would be interested in seeing what they said.

I think a portion does feed into McLean, but the parents I know have children who feed into Kilmer and Marshall. I guess if you want to pay for Langley you can. We don't have $35,000 per year per child to consider this.

I think that poster was referring to the private Langley school off Balls Hills (aka "Little Langley"), which is an expensive K-8 school.

Westgate is in Falls Church/22043, and in the Marshall pyramid, but about 20% of the kids there live in McLean and are zoned for Longfellow/McLean instead of Kilmer/Marshall.

St. James, OLGC, and St. Lukes are popular parochial schools nearby that are lower in cost if you're considering private.

Please explain this. I have no idea why one would have "concerns."

I know MANY families that have left St. James for public and are much happier in FCPS than they were at St. james.
